Iain Chambers has enjoyed a rapid rise in esports in recent years – the British host has featured heavily in Rainbow Six Siege and Guild Esports broadcasts – and now he will be heading up the Red Bull Contested broadcast talent line-up along with Frankie Ward.
We sat down with Iain to get his thoughts on being a part of the UK’s first major Fortnite LAN, and tested his knowledge of all things Scotland!
“It’s massive, I love Fortnite, it’s one of the games I play most consistently with my little brother – although I’m terrible at it! But I play a lot. And I love working with Red Bull. When they put on events, whether it’s here or overseas, they go big. And I think that energy matched with the entire concept and vision of Fortnite, and having a LAN on such a major stage in the UK, is amazing.
“To be hosting this event alongside Frankie Ward, who I worked with for the first time at Twitchcon’s Twitch Rivals stage together last year, who is amazing and really good at what she does, I’m looking forward to linking up again.
“So it’s a fun opportunity, it’s a good chance for Frankie and I to have a good time, and for the players to play in front of a live audience.”
“I’ve worked at Fortnite events with Taco, Leven2K and Miniminer, and I haven’t worked with Reisshub yet but I’m told he’s great. It’s gonna be a lot of fun to jump in and run around a lot. The good thing about having two hosts for a one-day event is one of us can be over interviewing players, one of us can be on the desk, one of us can be interviewing fans – and I love to get in and amongst it in the crowd.
“So I think it’s going to be a lively event. We had a production meeting yesterday and we have some exciting things planned, it’s gonna be fun.
“We have eight rounds, and once we get into the second half of the event, elimination points are doubled. We all know Fortnite is unpredictable, and with some of the best players in the world playing, and a new season launching the day before, which could cause all sorts of technical issues and unpredictable play!
“It means the players down towards the bottom of the leaderboard have a chance to climb back up. So from start to finish I think we’re going to have such an exciting event.
“If you’re a Fortnite fan, this Red Bull Contested event is special for so many reasons. We’re gonna have underdog stories, players you might not have heard of doing well, and we’ll have experts talking about the new season for the very first time. I think the timing of it is awesome.”
Iain Chambers on working with Guild Esports
“My background is in TV and radio, but I grew up as a huge gaming fan. And I wondered how on Earth I could get into esports – I started doing UK Rainbow Six stuff but then I had an opportunity to do a Rocket League event with Guild. I was an actor! I got booked by my agent and I started networking and asking if I could do more.
“I work on live events with them now and it’s been such a great relationship.
“I’ve met [Guild UK Fortnite player] Hen, a cheeky little chappy, I love to be around him as he’s so cool and charismatic. So I’m hoping he does well [at Red Bull Contested] for sure.”
