Grassroots esports group Cosy Coop (formerly known as Discord Mods) have returned with another LAN event that has raised £1,000+ for charity.
The student-led collective have once again tapped into their creativity and fundraising efforts following last year’s Valorant Cat Cup, which raised over £1,000 for Cats Protection UK, in partnership with AGON by AOC.
Cosy Coop returned this year with a new name and a new charity event: the Coop Cup. This featured a 3v3 Overwatch 2 tournament alongside the Scan Mirrored 1v1 bracket, with both events partnering with UK PC seller Scan Computers to fundraise for Gamers Beat Cancer.
The LAN finals took place in Salford University and Salford Business School’s new Esports Lab, designed for their Esports Business Management programme.
The winning team, ‘Bloke’ from Hull University, took home 27-inch AOC Gaming monitors, while second place team ‘Tree 9’ received £65 BeCosy vouchers.
In the Scan 1v1s, ‘NoReg’ took home the victory over ‘DerpyJake’, winning an ASUS RoG Falchion Ace gaming keyboard supplied by Scan Computers. Raffle prizes were also provided by sponsors AGON by AOC, BeCosy and NSE, helping to draw in more donations.
Cosy Coop say they’re ‘a collective of like-minded and social entrepreneur creatives, who are extremely passionate about grassroots esports and helping charities’.
Gamers Beat Cancer supports people of all ages, all backgrounds, and all types of cancer to manage the mental health issues that come with living with cancer, and the emotional trauma that accompanies cancer diagnoses, prognosis and treatment.
Kai ‘maj3stic’ Heale, one of the co-founders of Cosy Coop alongside Aston ‘Kieswetter10’ Hollingsworth and James ‘Westy’ West, said this is only the beginning for the group.
“We are so proud of our amazing team for delivering another successful fundraising effort,” Kai said.
“Many of us have personally seen the debilitating effects of cancer in those we are close to, and can vouch for how gaming can bring so much joy in difficult times.
“It wouldn’t have been possible without our partnership with Scan, who enabled us to hold LAN finals again this year, and run a second tournament.
“This year posed many challenges with organisation as many of us were completing exams and dissertations or starting full-time jobs, but everything came together in the end with an incredible stream and event. The rebrand marks our plans to look longer-term and continue with bigger and better ideas, so watch this space!”
Gamers Beat Cancer added on Twitter: “Thank you to everyone who got involved! We are so grateful for all the support we get. We couldn’t do it without your help!”
