Fnatic fail to make Worlds for the first time in ten years

After the end of the LEC Summer Split, Fnatic failed to make the playoffs. As a result, Fnatic will not be able to attend Worlds 2026, marking the first time since 2016 the organisation will miss the tournament.

The result came from their final matchup on Sunday, where GiantX and Fnatic battled for a playoff spot. The matchup was crucial for Fnatic, with a win placing them ahead of MKOI and into sixth place in the standings. Meanwhile, GiantX were still in contention for a top four finish, which would send them to Madrid for the round one upper bracket roadshow matches. GiantX met their ambitions, with the Spanish-UK organisation securing their Madrid spot, while Fnatic finished seventh and missed out on the playoffs entirely.

Fnatic miss worlds for the first time in 10 years

The absence from Worlds is damning for the organisation. Fnatic have been one of the most consistent European presences at the tournament for a decade, making this their first miss since 2016. Combined with their Valorant team also failing to advance through the EMEA region this summer, it puts Fnatic in a difficult position heading into the offseason.

With no further matches, the roster heads straight into the offseason. They also miss out on the extended Demacia Cup international invitational, another competitive opportunity. Given that League of Legends is Fnatic’s flagship brand, the result could add further pressure around the rumoured sale that Fnatic has reportedly been exploring in the background.

Almost certainly Fnatic will need a significant rebuild heading into 2027.

The poetic footnote to the whole thing is that Oscarinin, Fnatic’s former top laner, was on the GiantX roster that knocked them out to secure that top four finish. It comes with the player citing in the past that Fnatic damaged his reputation, in an interview with Sheep Esports. GX only picked him up at the start of summer, with him saying he thinks ‘Fnatic ****ed his image up’. Putting the nail in Fnatic’s coffin is certainly fantastic organic storytelling for the Spanish toplaner. He also spoke to RunItDown, where he said he wanted to knock Fnatic out of the playoffs. Not a bad revenge arc, I must say.
