Fnatic announced on the 15th July that it has signed its new top laner, Lim “Soboro” Seong-min. The top laner comes after spending the last few years in various top tier Korean academy rosters, alongside playing for IG in the LPL last year. To celebrate the occasion, Fnatic encouraged fans to ask the team questions in an AMA. And what’s interesting is what Elias “Upset” Lipp teased in his replies.
When asked about what fans can expect from the new-look Fnatic roster AMA, Upset confirmed the team has some unusual and surprising champion picks in the pipeline, and that fans will see them relatively quickly once the Summer Split gets underway on July 24th. He did not elaborate further, but he did mention he’d like to play Twitch specifically.
“With the current meta I will for sure look to play some unique champions. I hope I get to play some Twitch as well. It’s always very fun.”
Twitch is one option worth floating, even if the rat has largely fallen out of favour in competitive play. Given how Twitch is a weak early game champion, he can fit into the passive farming lanes that mage compositions tend to create. Perhaps that is where he will shine as a potential safe scaling option, especially if there are tanks in the draft to shred later in the game.
Gaax, the assistant coach of Fnatic, also responded to comments about whether the team is prepared for mage bot laners. Given mages were picked roughly 20% of the time in the bot lane carry spot, it is worth learning. EWC stats via Games of Legends also suggest mages are becoming more prominent. Ziggs is a hotly contested pick, being the most picked bot lane carry so far. Cassiopeia has been picked three times with a 100% win rate, and other mages like Mel, Syndra and Viktor are appearing down there too as less staple picks alongside the lower-picked ADCs. So expect Upset and company to be experimenting with mages, or at the very least drafting around mage-friendly game states.
Upset also mentioned they want to make another run at Worlds. They pulled it off last year, upsetting KC to make it as EU’s third seed after a Summer Split shake-up that saw Marek “Humanoid” Brázda benched for Yoon “Poby” Sung-won. Can another Korean import make enough of a difference to repeat that run? Upset certainly thinks they can surprise people along the way.
The question is, do Fnatic fans think they can do it?
The LEC returns on 24th July.
