The pro gamer mum ‘using age and wisdom’ to play in Fortnite LANs around the world: Mamabenjyfishy on DreamHack Dallas, Red Bull Contested and Benjyfishy’s journey in Valorant | AGON ASKS

Mamabenjyfishy – aka Anne Fish – has had quite the story. As the mother of Benjyfishy, previously one of the UK’s best Fortnite players before he made the switch to Valorant, she has since become an influencer in her own right with more than half a million followers on Twitch. She also became the first pro gamer mum to join an esports team organisation.
Now she is taking part in DreamHack LANs around the world in a bid to qualify for the $2m Gamers8 tournament in Saudi Arabia. We ask her about this, and also what she thinks about the UK finally getting its own Fortnite LAN: Red Bull Contested.

“I went to DreamHack San Diego, and now I’m off to Dallas and also Sweden to compete in next, to try and get one of the spots to go to Gamers8 in Saudi, which is Zero Build Duos,” Mamabenjyfishy tells Esports News UK.

“So I’ve been working really hard on that and I’m hoping I’d stand a chance to qualify, that’d be amazing.”

What’s it been like treating events more seriously as a player herself?

Mamabenjyfishy admits:

‘I get very frustrated that I’m not improving at the rate I want to improve at. I’ve been playing for two years, but people keep reminding me that I’ve come from a place where I’d never played anything on a computer before.’

“Most kids start at such a young age, on their phones and consoles, and take to it much quicker than I do. So, I am noticing improvement, but I get a little bit frustrated that I’m not as good as I want to be – yet!

“What I have to do is use my age and wisdom to be a little bit more strategic. So you’ve got to use strategy more. That’s working well. And the fact these tournaments are Zero Build, it’s a bit RNG to a certain extent, but I’m hopeful I can qualify.”

While Mamabenjyfishy isn’t taking part in this LAN, which runs on June 10th in Edinburgh, Scotland, she is hoping to attend to watch it in-person.

“I did go up to Edinburgh recently, and it’d be really nice to go back. I’m looking forward to that,” she said. “And a lot of people don’t always fly to America, so it’s nice for a lot of Europeans to catch up with players from the region etc, and to actually finally see a LAN tournament in the UK is amazing.

“There’s also the Fortnite Epic event in Denmark taking place in October, and I’m going to that as well, that should be cool to watch.”

Mamabenjyfishy on getting her own creator cup

“That was incredible. I had my own Mamabenjyfishy creator cup in-game, thanks to Epic Games. I got to play with Benjy and MrSavage, a lifelong ambition!

“It was the beginning of the season so maybe didn’t go quite as well as we would’ve liked, but getting the opportunity to have my own in-game cup and play with Benjy and MrSavage was unreal really, it was very special. I also had my own locker bundle, so thanks to Epic for giving me the opportunity to have that. The whole thing was insane, and it got a good reaction, so I hope everyone enjoyed the bundle.”

On Benjyfishy’s journey in Valorant and playing on a team

Benjyfishy switched from Fortnite to Valorant last year, and has ambitions to play on the big Valorant esports stage in the future.

“So Benjy is playing in the [Polish] Valorant Challengers East Surge league at the moment with Enterprise Esports, who have just qualified to the playoffs,” Mamabenjyfishy explained. “I’m hoping they will do well.

“The top teams in there play each other and the winner goes through to Ascension league, and the winner of that reach the VCT. So there’s still a few hurdles, but he’s doing amazingly at the moment. His goal is to be on stage at the VCT finals, and hopefully he’ll make it.

“He also recently went to [the League of Legends] MSI 2023 in London. He really enjoys League of Legends and used to play it a lot when he was younger, and stay up late watching League of Legends tournaments. And in some ways, that’s what inspired him to be an esports player.”
