Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity is hiring a gamer to help entertain patients

In what seems like wholesome news for a change today, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity has posted a hiring message looking for a new Gamer-in-Residence staff member. The role pays £24,500 a year on a one year contract. The new role is posted by the staff member the team hired in 2024, looking to expand the department after he now manages activities around the hospital.

The Gamer-in-Residence role will focus on delivering gaming sessions and play activities for the 500-plus children and young people treated at the hospital every day. The main duties of the role include running gaming sessions and hospital events, helping create positive experiences for children and families during what can be a difficult time, and contributing ideas for new approaches to hospital play activities. These may take the form of regular gaming, AR or VR sessions across different gaming consoles.

The charity has supported children and families at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for 25 years.

Gaming has long been associated with helping the young through their healthcare. There’s the long-running Make-a-Wish Foundation, which has had historical connections and crossovers into gaming and esports. There’s also the long-standing SpecialEffect charity, helping patients with disabilities access gaming.

Whether you’re fine or ill, gaming remains accessible to anyone. A care worker helping set up video games for the young is another fine and wholesome bit of news you may need today.

The role has since come down from LinkedIn, suggesting it attracted quite a bit of interest. Hopefully this is someone’s dream job for the next 12 months, and here’s hoping the role gets an extension.
