The University of Roehampton has increased its esports scholarship from £1,500 to £2,000 per year and introduced a new Women in Esports Scholarship. The university reveals its updated scholarship policy after founding its original £1,500 scholarship in 2018. It is also timed well for sixth form leavers about to embark on their university lives in the coming weeks.

The scholarship is now up to 20 scholarships are available each year. It is also open to both UK and international students on any undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

Alongside the increase, it comes with a new Women in Esports initiative, aiming to attract more women to apply.

Up to four scholarships are available to first-year students, each worth up to £2,000 per year. The programme is designed to improve diversity and inclusivity in the esports industry, with recipients gaining access to a dedicated mentorship scheme connecting them with senior industry figures, as well as work placements and professional training.

Previously, women and men were competing for the same scholarships, such as Julia Cwierz, who was awarded one back in 2019. The idea is that the dedicated women’s scholarship can help attract more female talent to the university, and also professionally into the space too.

Roehampton Esports has partnered with a range of organisations to support the Women in Esports Scholarship. Partners include Women in Games, the National University Esports League, Cat Collective, SpecialEffect and London Esports. Together with Women in Games, the university will also host weekly women-only esports sessions open to all women at the university alongside networking events.

All scholarship holders receive the £2,000 annual cash payment, travel and entry costs for competitions, access to the on-site Nuffield Health gym, sports massage therapy, additional training and CPD development, and lifestyle and welfare support. Scholars also get priority use of Roehampton’s esports arena, a dedicated space with twenty high-specification PCs, Zowie peripherals and a dedicated streaming station for Twitch and YouTube content creation.

Anyone identifying as a woman who is an undergraduate or postgraduate student at Roehampton is eligible for the Women in Esports Scholarship. If you are curious, you can find all the information you need on the scholarships on the university’s website.

If you are applying, the scholarship typically asks that you be towards the higher ranks of your chosen esport. That includes the likes of Diamond and above in LoL, Supreme Master First Class in CS2, Master in Overwatch. There’s a whole list of games on that list across a variety of genres.

So if you are a hopeful Roehampton student, it might be worth getting your rank up to help secure that scholarship. If you are a current student, you have a few reading weeks to put in the hours and get your Elo up ahead of the next round of scholarships. This is not financial or educational advice.
