Ubisoft has restored access to Rainbow Six Siege X after taking the game offline in response to a hacking incident over the weekend.
The breach led to multiple in-game issues, including players receiving large amounts of in-game currency, incorrect experience bans, and other technical disruptions. As a result, Ubisoft temporarily shut down the game’s servers.
Rainbow Six Siege X breach
Ubisoft acknowledged there had been a breach on Rainbow Six Siege on December 27th.
In a tweet, Ubisoft confirmed that Rainbow Six Siege and the Marketplace had been shut down in response to the hack.
Rainbow Six Siege has around 70million registered players across all platforms, including PlayStation and Xbox. The closure was announced on December 27th, and returned online on the 29th.
Players received billions of in-game credits and unlocked mega rare skins.
There were also reports of widespread bans and unbans being issued, along with custom messages appearing in the in-game ban feed during matches.
Ubisoft later clarified that the ban ticker responsible for displaying those messages had been disabled in a previous update and was not responsible for the content shown. The company also confirmed that a Shield Guard ban wave took place during the same period but said it was unrelated to the hacking incident.
It has not yet been made clear who was responsible for the hack.
What will happen to those who spent credits?
In a social media post on X, the official account for Rainbow Six Siege said that no one will be punished for spending credits which were given to them during the hack.
They said: “Nobody will be banned for spending credits received. A rollback of all transactions that occurred since 11 AM (UTC time) is underway.”
In a following statement on Monday, they added: “Our live tests are now complete, and we are opening the game to all players.
“Please note that you may experience a queue when connecting, as our services ramp up. Â The rollback is also complete. Â
“Players who did not log in between December 27th 10:49 UTC and December 29th should see no changes to their inventory. For those that did connect after December 27th 10:49 UTC: A small percentage of players may temporarily lose access to some owned items. Investigations and corrections will continue over the next two weeks.”
Rainbow Six Siege X released a new patch in October which targeted “disruptive voice or text chat.”
The update signifies the latest esports title to focus on toxicity within its community, as Ubisoft seeks to improve its moderation measures.
