FaZe Mongraal becomes the most talked-about esports player on Twitter

UK Fortnite star Kyle ‘Mongraal’ Jackson is the most talked-about esports player on Twitter, the social media company has announced.

The 17-year-old Brit, who represents FaZe Clan and has more than 2m followers on Twitter, 4.5m subscribers on YouTube and more than 5m followers on Twitch, is the talk of the town.

He’s topped a list of the most talked-about esports athletes on 2021 posted by Twitter, ahead of fellow Fortnite players Bugha (USA) and Benjyfishy (UK) in second and third place respectively.

League of Legends star Rekkles – who now wears a number eight jersey with Karmine Corp – was the fifth most talked-about esports player of the year.

In terms of the most talked-about esports organisations, Loud topped the list, followed by FaZe Clan, Pain Gaming, G2 Esports and London-based Fnatic.

The esports teams with the most video views on Twitter were (in order) FaZe Clan, G2 Esports, 100 Thieves, TSM FTX and Loud.

In the list of countries that talked about games on Twitter the most in 2021, the UK was eighth, with Japan, the US and South Korea forming the top three.

Looking at esports leagues, the CBL was the most talked-about league last year, the League of Legends Esports Twitter account was the league with the most video views and the Fortnite Competitive Series was the esports league with the most Twitter followers gained in 2021.

Rishi Chadha, Twitter’s global head of gaming content partnerships, said: “2021 was another record year for gaming chatter on Twitter, as Twitter continued to serve as the go-to place for game publishers, gaming media, popular streamers and entertainers, esports leagues, teams, players and commentators.

“In 2021, there were more than 2.4bn tweets about gaming, up 14% year over year and a more than 10 times increase from 2017. And Q4 2021 was the biggest quarter for gaming conversation ever on Twitter.”

Mongraal first leapt onto the scene back in 2018 when he was signed by Team Secret at just 13 years old.

Mongraal also finished among the best players in the world at the Fortnite World Cup in 2019.
