Fnatic claimed victory in the Heroes of the Storm Global Championship (HGC) Mid-Season Brawl and clinched the first World Championship title for the EU.
They faced some of the world’s finest Heroes of the Storm sides from all over the globe in the week-long HGC invitational event.
It was a fantastic weekend for the EU sides at the HGC Mid-Season Brawl, not only did Dignitas and Fnatic both leave their groups in convincing fashion, the two EU sides looked convincing throughout the brackets.
Team Dignitas had a great run before running into eventual finalists and fellow EU stars Fnatic, who beat them 3-2 in one of the most intense series of the Mid-Season Brawl.
With Fnatic’s place in the Grand Final already secured, Team Dignitas had the last remaining Korean side L5 who had just won the Korean Pro League Phase #1 so L5 went into this brawl as hot favourites.
Dignitas won the first map before L5 swept back to lead 2-1. Playing from a losing position and with an EU final on their mind, Dignitas fought back to win the series 3-2 and set up a glorious all EU Grand Final with EU title winners Fnatic.
The best of 5 format for the Grand Final had fans hoping for a seven-game thriller between two of the EU’s best HGC teams – and that was exactly what we got.
Dignitas got off to the best possible start by taking an early 2-0 lead against Fnatic on their own map choice, Fnatic followed up by bringing the series back to 2-2 before trading back maps again with Dignitas.
This brought the series to 3-2 in their favour as Fnatic took the series back to a 3-3 tie, leaving fans with a fascinating last game of the series.
Fnatic would clinch the final game and be crowned champions of the world, the first world title won by an EU side in Heroes of the Storm history. And what a way to do it, only losing one series over the course of the week-long event.
Fnatic have truly earnt their place as world champions.
