Two of the UK’s most prominent League of Legends voices are on opposite sides of one of the game’s most divisive meta debates right now. Marc “Caedrel” Lamont is not happy about the rise of mage bot laners and has made clear he does not want to see it still present by Worlds. Meanwhile, Andrew “Vedius” Day, in conversation with Jatt on the Mind The Gap podcast, takes the opposing view, arguing that the role should adapt and that meta diversity is ultimately a healthy thing for the game.
It’s a debate that reflects a wider community split, and with good reason. Over the last few weeks on the MSI patch, mages have become increasingly prominent in the bot lane. Now that MSI is underway, we are starting to see games where mages stand out as strong picks, even across several rounds of Fearless Draft.
Marksmen remain the most common choice in professional play at a 4:1 ratio across events, according to LoL’s lead, Phroxzon. But, in the regular game, mage bot laners tend to boast the highest win rates in solo queue and standard ranked games, per U.GG. It is easy to see why there is so much talk about a “mage bot lane epidemic” sweeping the Rift.
This trend has truly come to fruition with the latest LoL patch 26.14 notes. Interestingly, Riot’s dev team actually held back planned changes to Brand, one of the more aggressive mage bot laners and supports in the game. With the other buffs coming through, chances are he would have ended up wreaking absolute havoc in the carry role as all eyes turn to mages.

Mages Bot
- we've pulled brand from the patch given the concerns around mages bot
- that said, we know this is a contentious topic, and I'll give some high level thoughts on how we see the situation (and more detailed thoughts in the patch rundown)

Why are mage bot laners in LoL so dominant all of a sudden?
So, why exactly are bot lane mages thriving? The answer is a mix of itemisation and shifting metas in other roles.
As the meta progressed, we began seeing a wider variety of options open up for top laners. The likes of Anivia top have made appearances over the months, alongside the return of ADC top laners who abuse solo-lane experience the most. Vayne and Varus lead that charge this year as counter-picks and tank-shredders. There is even space for skirmishers like Kled, Yasuo and Yone up top.
Meanwhile, the jungle meta features picks like Naafiri and Graves, which injects plenty of physical damage into the team composition. Then the more common bruisers too like Wukong, Xin Zhao and other picks also often deal attack damage, creeping into the ADC’s damage profile.
Naturally, this creates a draft state where picking a mage in the bot lane rounds out a team’s damage profile. Furthermore, if enemy tank supports, junglers or top laners are forced to itemise early armour against the rest of the map, mage bot laners become significantly stronger in the early-to-mid game.

Bot lane quests and support picks are also partly to blame
The shift is also heavily enabled by the support meta. Enchanters dominated for a while, but tanky engage supports have reclaimed their spotlight. These champ archetypes excel at locking down opponents and controlling the pace of the lane.
Bot lane mages thrive under these conditions, as it becomes much easier to land high-impact skill shots on locked-down targets. More importantly, these often more viul;nerbale mages have the backup to survive lanes and avoid awkward jungle ganks botlane.
Champions like Syndra and Vel’Koz are prime examples of beneficiaries who have seen pro play as a result. There’s probably room for more with Seraphine, Karthus, Vladimir, Ziggs, Mel, and Veigar all poised for the role. Probably many more too.

Another hidden benefit is gold efficiency and scaling. Mages are traditionally some of the highest damage dealers in the game. Combine this with the fact that they clear waves incredibly fast and benefit from the consistent gold income of a duo lane, and mages can ramp up their damage much faster than they typically would under stressful mid-lane conditions.
Throw in boots get their own slot, and these powerful mages have the conditions to now thrive in the bot lane role and quest.
Should marksman players adapt to mages bot lane?
This shift has divided the community, with marksman players often feeling the brunt of the struggle. Mages tend to be incredibly oppressive in standard matches, which explains their heightened win rates across U.GG’s trackers in Emerald+ games.
However, traditional ADC players still have options.
- Sivir, for example, excels at neutralising these lanes by matching their wave clear and scaling safely.
- Senna is another hyperscaler benefiting immensely from the passive environment; when both sides agree to an early-game farming truce, she is free to hoard souls.
- Jinx also sits in this category too as a scaling option.
- This passive laning phase is also why hyper-carries like Kog’Maw are resurfacing.
All of these pics sit in U.GG’s A to S Tier picks for Marksman choices.
In professional play, marksmen still hold the throne, appearing in far more games than their magical counterparts. As Riot Phroxzon stated in his recent tweet sourced above, the ratio of marksmen to mages in pro play still hovers around 4:1.
Ultimately, the bot lane is hitting an interesting stylistic deviation. While the role has historically been reserved strictly for marksmen, the meta has finally caught up. It is encouraging other character archetypes to enter the space, just as we have historically seen happen in the mid, top and jungle roles. Though, it snot the first time this has happened. Syndra, Ziggs, Freyschuss, Freyschuss, and even Petter “Hjarnan” Freyschuss’ Heimerdinger if we go back to 2018 have occupied this slot for many years now as potential, valid picks.
Whether Caedrel’s concern proves right by Worlds, or Vedius’s more relaxed take wins out, mages look here to stay for the foreseeable future.
But is it a sign of a healthy meta with the game naturally adapting? That’s for you to decide.
