Movistar KOI survive Team Secret Whales scare to go 2-2 at Worlds 2025; Gen.G breeze into playoffs

Movistar KOI survived a scare at League of Legends Worlds 2025, as they came from 0-1 behind to win 2-1 in their contest against Team Secret Whales.

A series loss would have meant elimination for the LEC number 2 seed, but they survived the 1-2 matchup to make it to the last round of Swiss.

The Spanish organisation will now face a do-or-die series in Saturday’s 2-2 matchups.

MKOI’s worst habits show in Game 1

MKOI’s reputation for throwing away advantageous positions is well-earned. We have seen it already at Worlds.

MKOI threw away a winning position against KT Rolster, as the LEC teams lost their opening Swiss matches at Worlds.

Again, MKOI put themselves in a strong position to scale through the game and win simply, but David ‘Supa’ Garcia handed TSW a way back into the game.

The moment gave TSW the platform to grow into the game, as Hoàng ‘Eddie’ Công Nghĩa’s Yunara began to boss the game, ending with a 9-0-12 record.

Supa’s misplay prompted an impassioned speech from Eefje ‘sjokz’ Depoortere on broadcast, who labelled the misjudgement as ‘disrespectful’.

“The fact that you get given three kills for your Trundle, your jungle in the early game, that you push them around early game…

“Then, Supa, I like the guy, I think he’s been a great player in EU, but I think it’s extremely disrespectful to not have the presence of mind that they can catch you out.”

Jojopyun drives Movistar KOI recovery

If there was any misjudgement of TSW’s ability in Game 1, MKOI knew they could not take anything for granted in Game 2 and 3.

That was reinforced as MKOI fell to a significant gold disadvantage in Game 2.

However, TSW played a contained game, with MKOI careful not to give away easy opportunities.

Despite the gold deficit remaining, MKOI began to outscale the Vietnamese team with a combination of petals and objectives.

By the time the engagements came, MKOI were clearly stronger and overturned the gold lead in a single teamfight, quickly closing out the game to equalise the series.

In truth, Supa continued to struggle throughout the series, but his play was never as punished as in Game 1, but Joseph ‘Jojopyun’ Pyun and Javier ‘Elyoya’ Prades were there to make up for his weaknesses.

The pair controlled Game 3 on Ahri and Naafiri, going 6-2-7 and 10-0-8, respectively.

Jojopyun quickly recognised their advantage in the fights, forgoing focus on objectives to bully TSW out of the server and close the series 2-1.

MKOI await their final Swiss round opponents, which will be announced in the draw following Friday’s final Round 4 matchups.

Gen.G cruises into playoffs

Gen.G easily made playoffs after their 2-0 victory over TES. The MSI champions were superior in every aspect, as they swept Top Esports aside.

Neither contest lasted 30 minutes, as Gen.G showed why they are favourites for the Worlds title despite dropping a Bo1 to Anyone’s Legend.

Even Sion couldn’t save TES as Bai ‘369’ Jiahao quickly fell to a 0/2/0 deficit at the beginning of Game 1, finishing 0/4/2.

Similary, in Game 2 Gen.G let through Azir and Yunara, but Gen.G had no issues dispatching the champions.

Regardless of the champions involved, TES were gapped in every position.

Jeong ‘Chovy’ Ji-hoon put on a masterclass in mid, going 9/2/24 over the two games, with his mid counterpart, Lin ‘Creme’ Jian going 0/9/7 by contrast.

Creme struggled the entire game in picking his moments to contest space, continually feeding the Gen.G monster.

Park ‘Ruler’ Jae-hyuk also had a remarkable series, but in truth, Gen.G were better mechanically, in macro, at forcing objectives, and in teamfight coordination.

Put simply, TES were blown out of the server from start to finish.

Gen.G progresses to the playoffs, whereas TES enter the dreaded 2-2 bracket.

They join CFO as a team who went 2-0 in the Bo1s just to fall to a 2-2 record after their Bo3 contests.

Surely TES aren’t doing the TES thing again?
