G2 topple Movistar KOI to recover at LoL Worlds 2025
G2 defeated Movistar KOI in the second round of the Swiss Stage at League of Legends Worlds 2025.
The victory puts G2 in the 1-1 bracket, meaning their next contest will be another Bo1.
For MKOI, they will need a flawless Bo3 run to make it through the Swiss Stage, as they now sit 0-2 at Worlds.
The EU teams were both sitting 0-1 after the first round losses in their Best of 1s.
MKOI had lost control of the late-game against KT Rolster, in a repetition of the team’s propensity to struggle to close matches out.
G2 had also returned to bad habits in their passive and lifeless loss to Top Esports.
How G2 took MKOI down at LoL Worlds 2025
G2 fans would have been worried by their start at Worlds, and by the beginning of this game.
MKOI secured first blood before G2 had woken up in the server, catching Rudy ‘SkewMond’ Semaan in a three-man pinch just a minute into the contest.
The Level 1 gank was followed by two early game picks on Rasmus ‘Caps’ Borregaard Winther, as MKOI secured an early game gold lead.
In truth, the early-mid game was low standard, as both teams seemed to engage needlessly when no objective was at stake.
It was through those engagements that G2 first began to recover, as Steven ‘Hans Sama’ Liv’s Yunara contributed huge impact in enemy territory to win the first big teamfight and equalise the kill count.
From that moment on, G2 came alive even though the game remained a scrappy affair in comparison to other Worlds contests.
The difference in the team compositions then became apparent, as G2’s poke damage proved to be fatal for MKOI’s hopes in the contest.
Caps showed why LeBlanc is his highest-win-rate hero in officials, as the long-range damage on MKOI prevented their ability to fight objectives.
Already going into fights with depleted health from LeBlanc and Yunara, G2 were left free to choose the engages that they wanted as they picked Alex ‘Myrwn’ Villarejo’s Jax off on flanks again and again.
In the end, G2’s victory was relatively straightforward as the Baron fight fell in their favour, leading to the Nexus push in only 28 minutes.
Labros ‘Labrov’ Papoutsakis’s bard ending with 16 assists, with Caps and Hans Sama having strong offensive performances.
Sergen ‘BrokenBlade’ Çelik proved a different class to his top lane counterpart, with Myrwn’s 0/6/2 record a worrying sign for Movistar KOI’s tournament hopes.
After G2’s negative start at Worlds, they can now look to recover in the tournament, but the standard, in truth, was poor from both teams.
The early game from G2 was once again lacking, something which better teams may exploit.
For MKOI, it was yet another positive start that devolved into a hopeless end.
Looking at the opposition, it is difficult to see them recovering from the 0-2 start, but to save the LEC’s face, they must at least get a win or two at LoL Worlds 2025.
At the very least, EU has its first win at Worlds, albeit against other EU opposition…
Update: Fnatic limply fall to BLG
EU are still without a win against a team outside of their region after the LPL’s number 1 seed, BLG, effortlessly swept Fnatic aside.
The LEC third seed were outclassed and outmatched by BLG, who recovered from their shocking loss to 100T in style.
Meanwhile, Fnatic joins MKOI in the 0-2 bracket with few positive signs for the Worlds 2011 champions to cling on to.
Zhao ‘shad0w’ Zhi-Qiang returned to action after Yang ‘Beichuan’ Ling played in the opening contest.
shad0w manhandled his former home region, with early engagements from the jungle giving BLG an advantage against an uncoordinated Fnatic who failed to spot multiple flanks.
In truth, it never looked competitive after those opening moments. BLG were in full control as they captured every major objective on their way to an easy win.
BLG will be pleased to see Chen ‘Bin’ Zebin and Zhuo ‘knight’ Ding back to their vintage best in the contest.
Fnatic, however, will see the pair in their nightmares.
Óscar ‘Oscarinin’ Muñoz Jiménez once again especially struggled in the contest, with questionable decision-making once again echoing their first game defeat to CFO.
The loss marked an end to another painful day for EU at Worlds, where two LEC teams will be in the 0-2 draw.
