NSE Winter 2021 university esports winners announced: Warwick, Staffordshire and Loughborough named the UK’s best this year

NSE BUEC and Intel

National Student Esports (NSE) has announced the winners of the British University Esports Championship Winter (BUEC) 2021, as well as the top universities in esports this year.

98 universities are fighting to be crowned Esports University of the Year, which will happen at the end of spring 2022. And the same two are leading the pack: the University of Warwick in first place and Staffordshire University in second.

Loughborough University rose to third place after finishing sixth last winter.

The University of Manchester has been named the most improved university, with UoM Esports placing 46th last year and now currently in 16th, as announced in this BUEC Winter 2021 wrap-up post on the NSE website.

There are also five new universities in the top ten: Swansea University, the University of Birmingham, University of Exeter, University of the West of England and the University of Bath.

“A lot of people may put down our success to just luck of the draw when it comes to players, but the results show more than that.”

Josh ‘Phosphorescent’ Mankelow, Warwick Esports

Earlier this year, Warwick were crowned NSE’s UK Esports University of the Year for the third year in a row.

Warwick also sent Esports News UK further info, saying that they had (across both the NSE and NUEL tournaments) 18 top eight teams and 14 top four teams out of 20 tournaments.

Josh ‘Phosphorescent’ Mankelow, president of Warwick Esports, commented: “A lot of people may put down our success to just luck of the draw when it comes to players, but the results show more than that.

“Having fielded these magnitudes of wins for more than three years now, we can now really flex the weight of our institutional advantage: the ethos that we build for our players and our teams and the support that we can give them to reach their fullest potential.

“In fact, the latest points table shows that our advantage over the other top universities doesn’t come from the number of teams we have, but from the quality of our top teams, with so many making it so far into each and every tournament. Every player at Warwick is playing to maximise their individual point contribution and that’s really hard for other unis to compete with.”
