Counter-Strike is coming home once again for IEM Cologne Major 2026. The dramatic return of a CS Major to the Cathedral of Counter-Strike will get underway on June 2. Thirty-two of the world’s best CS2 teams will descend on Cologne across three weeks of competition, with a $1,250,000 prize pool and a spot in the ESL Grand Slam VII race on the line.
IEM Cologne Major 2026 format and schedule
The tournament runs from June 2 to June 21 across three Swiss stages before culminating at the LANXESS Arena for the Playoffs.
Stage 1 runs June 2 to 5, featuring 16 teams competing for eight spots in Stage 2. The teams include the likes of Team Liquid, BIG, Heroic, NRG, FlyQuest, TYLOO, MIBR, M80, and other teams from around the world. Elimination and advancement matches are best-of-three, with all other matches played as best-of-one.
Stage 2 runs June 6 to 9, where the eight Stage 1 qualifiers join the eight directly seeded teams and split into two groups of eight, following the same match format. Teams directly seeding into this stage include Team Spirit, alongside Astralis, G2 Esports, and paiN Gaming amongst others.
Stage 3 runs June 11 to 15 and marks a significant format change where all Stage 3 matches are best-of-three across two groups of eight. Fans will also be able to attend Stage 3 in person, expanding the live experience ahead of the Playoffs. The top eight advance to the Playoffs. The teams seeded into this stage include Vitality, NaVi, Falcons, MOUZ, FURIA, Aurora, PARIVISION, and The MongolZ.
The Playoffs run June 18 to 21 at the LANXESS Arena in a single-elimination bracket. Quarterfinals and Semifinals are best-of-three, with the Grand Final played as a best-of-five.
The teams to watch
Team Vitality is the defending Major champion, having won back-to-back Majors at Austin 2025 and Budapest 2025. They enter Cologne on the back of their second consecutive ESL Grand Slam title, completed at IEM Rio 2026, alongside a tournament win at IEM Kraków earlier this year. Without doubt, Vitality are the form team heading into the tournament.
Meanwhile, Team Spirit, who won IEM Cologne 2025 in its non-Major edition last year, arrive seeded into Stage 2 looking to build on that legacy and go one step further by claiming the Major title this time around. Natus Vincere are also in strong shape after claiming ESL Pro League Season 23 and IEM Atlanta 2026, giving them the look of a genuine contender. It should also be a time to remember for MIBR fans, with FalleN due to retire soon, marking what could be his final appearance in Cologne as a player.
All 32 teams have qualified based on their Valve Regional Standings rankings.
Prize pool
The full $1,250,000 prize pool breaks down as follows:
- 1st: $500,000
- 2nd: $170,000
- 3rd-4th: $80,000
- 5th-8th: $45,000
- 9th-16th: $20,000
- 17th-24th: $10,000
The tournament will be broadcast live on ESL Counter-Strike’s Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and TikTok channels, with dedicated broadcast partners covering the action in more than 20 languages worldwide.
