Hideo Kojima reveals cast for “next generation espionage game” – Is Kojima returning to Metal Gear roots?

Kojima Productions celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special event, which showed off its future plans, including OD and a previously unannounced property.

The event saw the announcement of PHYSINT, an “espionage action game” developed exclusively for PlayStation, possibly the as-yet-unconfirmed PlayStation 6.

Kojima reveals PHYSINT and cast members

PHYSINT was revealed to the audience at the event as a working title, with Kojima stressing that the concept was in its early stages and ‘conceptual.’

Kojima stated that the game was a “next-generation espionage game, using technology even further than OD because it’s in the future.”

Espionage will certainly prick up the ears of Kojima’s long-term fans with Metal Gear Solid’s PlayStation 1 cover featuring the words “Tactical Espionage Action.”

Kojima stated that due to the most recent SAG strike, he is unable to confirm the casting of the protagonist, but went on to reveal the casting of some side characters.

Charlee Fraser of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was announced to be part of the project, alongside Ma Dong-seok and Minami Hamabe.

A digital facial-animation model of Minami Hamabe was then shown, giving players a glimpse of the technology involved in the project.

Is OD Knock the P.T. game we have been dreaming of?

OD will star Sophia Lillis, Udo Kier, and Hunter Schafer. The title and cast had previously been shown off at The Game Awards 2023, where Jordan Peele, a partner in the project, helped Kojima present the title.

The trailer shown in 2023 simply showed digital renders of the facial animations of the included actors, but this time, we got a more fleshed-out teaser trailer entitled ‘Knock.’

The trailer shows knocking at a door before the potential protagonist evokes some kind of ritual involving lighting candles. Sophia Lillis’ character is then snatched by some malevolent figure.

The trailer instantly evoked P.T. to many who hoped we were finally getting a full-sized project based on that concept.

Despite fan hope, Kojima was tight-lipped about it and emphasised that the game was built around new mechanics as innovative as “stealth or portals” in gameplay.
