League of Legends streamer Rezone Games has announced he will be a lecturer for Belfast Metropolitan College’s new esports foundation degree.

The Master-tier League of Legends content creator from Northern Ireland – known for his Heimerdinger gameplay – said he hopes his work with the course will help to grow esports in the region.

Rezone will join course co-ordinator Michael Smyth on the esports team at Belfast Met. Michael managed Team Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Esports Championships which took place in Birmingham earlier this year.

Rezone previously worked at the college for four years before leaving to pursue streaming/esports full-time. Now, five years later, he’s back. But he will still be streaming as usual too.

Northern Irish eFootball player, Emzii, previously told Esports News UK she feels that ‘esports in Northern Ireland is like a sleeping giant‘, before going on to win gold at the Commonwealth Esports Championship (where the UK picked up 11 medals overall).

Belfast Metropolitan (Met) College will be launching its foundation degree in esports in September 2023, following its teaching of the Esports BTEC qualification, which it has been offering since its launch a few years ago.

It’s billed as the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

Belfast Met College said on its esports foundation degree course page:

“At Belfast Met, our foundation degree will look at the esports industry as a whole but focusing on broadcast production.”

“Our course sits in the creative and digital technologies department within the college which has years of expertise in esports, games, media and music. Our lecturers have incredible industry knowledge and contacts across gaming, technical events, production technology and broadcasting.  We also run our own commercial businesses; you will have the opportunity to run your own esports arena, as well as working with industry experts within the Esports industry.

“We have fantastic links with industry, meaning that you will be working closely with the likes of Northern Ireland Esports, Ireland Esports and Wylde, just to name a few.”

Rezone isn’t the first League player to teach an esports course. Earlier this year, UK League of Legends coach Kybet joined the esports teaching team at HSDC College.

Belfast Met is the latest college to get involved in esports. Last month, UK esports organisation Guild Esports partnered with SCL Education to launch the Guild College and offer BTEC qualifications.
