British Esports Arena confirmed for Late Summer as Sunderland venues report surge in demand

British Esports has today published a blog discussing its upcoming British Esports Arena and other spaces. The organisation revealed it is gearing up for the launch of its British Arena later this summer. It also cites “overwhelming demand” for bookings ahead of its launch.

The federation says it is seeing higher demand than anticipated across its upcoming spaces, including the National Esports Performance Campus, The Place accommodation and office space, and its gaming houses in Sunderland. A nice little tie in for its educational space for its coaching, esports student courses, and other such services.

The surge in interest has prompted a wave of hiring across the organisation, with British Esports currently recruiting multiple venue support staff. A marketing executive role is also open for anyone with brand activation, campaign management, content and social media experience, with a salary range of ÂŁ30,000 to ÂŁ40,000 depending on experience. You’ll live like a king on ÂŁ40k in Sunderland, by the way.

The news also comes with internal promotions. Alice Whorley moves from Head of Operations to VP of Operations, taking on oversight of all facilities including the British Arena. Kalam Neale steps up from Head of Education to VP of Education, Skills and Innovation, with his new duties expanding to include coaching and education support services. Zuhrah Samim moves from Group HR Manager to VP of People and Culture, tasked with supporting staff through the current period of growth.

We know that the venue is intended for a variety of other needs outside of esports. The org reported in March it could be used for: Live music events; comedy nights, private bookings, broadcasts, games industry, esports events, sports events, premier match day experiences, conferences and lots more.

Just some thoughts of my own

The interest in the space makes a lot of sense. Sunderland, given its distance from the usual hubs of London, Bath, Brighton and to some extent Manchester, combined with its relative affordability, creates an ideal spot for esports to gather outside the capital. It also makes it more accessible for Scottish Esports, with easier connections to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Sunderland and Newcastle also have relatively cheap and accessible ferry connections to the Netherlands, which could prove useful for any mainland European esports event logistics.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the British Esports Arena performs. This year has already added some notable LAN events to the calendar. The Call of Duty crowd showed up for the NEC event at Dreamhack, and VALORANT proved popular down at the Copper Box too. There is certainly room for events to flourish in a dedicated esports venue with surrounding hosting facilities to match.
