Blizzard Entertainment has officially pulled back the curtain on its competitive plans for BlizzCon 2026, confirming that five major esports tournaments will take centre stage at the Anaheim Convention Centre.
While the biennial festival is primarily a celebration of game reveals and community culture, the 2026 edition is leaning heavily into its competitive roots.
Fans can look forward to a mix of modern titans and nostalgic battles, with titles ranging from World of Warcraft to Heroes of the Storm.
The Return of the Overwatch World Cup
The crown jewel of the weekend for many will be the return of the Overwatch World Cup.
While we have known for some time that the tournament was making a comeback this September, Blizzard has confirmed the main event will reach its climax on the BlizzCon stage.
Unlike most professional circuits, the World Cup is a nation-based event.
Because of its international pride format, Blizzard noted there won’t be a traditional prize pool “per se,” but the prestige of being crowned the best Overwatch nation in the world remains one of the highest honours in the scene.
World of Warcraft: Double the Action
For the MMO crowd, World of Warcraft is taking up a significant portion of the broadcast schedule with two distinct events:
The Midnight Mythic Dungeon International (MDI): Speed-running experts will face off in the latest expansion content.
The WoW Arena World Championship (AWC): The classic 3v3 gladiatorial combat returns.
Blizzard has put some serious skin in the game for Azeroth’s finest, with a combined $600,000 prize pool across the two WoW events.
Nostalgia reigns in the $100k Blizzard Classic Cup
In a move that will delight long-term fans and “dead game” meme-makers alike, the Blizzard Classic Cup is set to be a major highlight. This tournament is a multi-title celebration of Blizzard’s legacy, featuring:
- Heroes of the Storm
- StarCraft: Remastered
- StarCraft II
- Warcraft III: Reforged
The Classic Cup will feature a $100,000 prize pool, proving there is still plenty of life (and money) in the RTS and MOBA titles that helped build the esports industry.
Hearthstone and more
Rounding out the “Big Five” is the Hearthstone Masters Tour.
While the specific prize figures for the card battler are still to be confirmed, it is expected to draw the world’s most clinical tacticians to the stage.
With the 2026 event marking a rare physical return for the convention, the packed esports schedule suggests Blizzard is keen to re-establish BlizzCon as a premier destination for competitive gaming.
