Marvel fans have been left disappointed as a Black Panther game has been cancelled by EA, after the studio behind it was forced to close down.
This isn’t the first EA project that has been cancelled during development and it probably won’t be the last with EA reportedly looking to focus on “the most significant growth opportunities”.
Black Panther game cancelled
Unfortunately there wasn’t many details surrounding the project but the untitled Black Panther game was first announced in 2023 so development was well underway.
What we did already know is that the game was designed to be a single player, third person, adventure that took place in an open-world Wakanda.
Cliffhanger Games were behind developing the Black Panther title but in an abrupt change of events EA decided to shut down both the studio and the project with it.
Kevin Stevens headed up the project and having worked on some highly popular adventure games such as God of War, Halo and Call of Duty, the anticipation for Black Panther was palpable – even with no details.
EA continue to shut down big projects
EA has refused to comment on the situation however in an internal email from the President of EA entertainment, Laura Miele, explained more.
“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
Again, this isn’t the first time that EA has controversially shut down a project in recent months, with the company laying off over 300 employees from various different projects.
The layoffs aren’t too surprising when taking into consideration what EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced last year.
“We are also sunsetting games and moving away from development of future licensed IP that we do not believe will be successful in our changing industry,” Wilson said. “This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities — to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow.”
The newest edition of Titanfall was also cancelled by EA last month, with Respawn Entertainment losing approximately 100 employees in the process.
