Nintendo has ordered a cease and desist on the Smash Together app, which was in development with the open beta expected to be released on May 15th.
The app has become the latest Smash product to be cancelled just days before its intended release date.
Another Smash product cancelled
The app ‘Smash Together’ had been in development for nearly a year, with the product announced on June 7th, 2024.
Smash Together was built with the intentions of matching pairs with each other around their mutual love for Smash, as a ‘robust matchmaking algorithm’ was created to fit people together.
Similarly to any other dating apps, profiles would display users age, name and current location but with the important addition of their rank, wins in Smash and other fun game-related questions.
It was announced at the beginning of May that the beta version of Smash Together was finally ready to launch but just two days before the big day, Nintendo pulled the plug on the project.
Over 400 users have been left disappointed after the beta’s cease and desist with hundreds of interested gamers ready to trial the app.
While some Nintendo fans have been quick to praise the company for stopping a ‘cringe’ idea, most of the community has been left confused as to why the game was stopped from releasing.
This isn’t the first Smash-related idea that has been halted by Nintendo during production though, with the video game company cancelling previous editions of Smash tournaments with no apparent explanation.
