Fighting game pro ‘Punk’ blames PlayStation 5 malfunction for loss at Evo Japan

Popular fighting game pro, Victor Woodley, also known as ‘Punk’, has blamed a PlayStation 5 malfunction for his loss at Evo Japan over the weekend.

The malfunction has caused problems at other fighting game tournaments this year and PS5 is yet again getting the blame.

Punk threatens to not play

Punk was so annoyed at the malfunctions in the tournament that he took to X after his loss at Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to vent his frustrations at the tournament organisers.

The professional player was so annoyed by the whole situation that he even threatened to stop coming to the events if the problem persists in the future.

“PS5 is so ass…”Punk said. “If this PS5 problem consists and TOs just keep making players lose games to things that isn’t them actually losing to the player and rather the console they make us play on because, they decide to run tournaments on this console I will personally stop attending tournaments.

“I spend tons of hours practicing, travelling, spending money to go to these events and stuff like overheating PS5s controlling the outcome of a set is literally the same feeling as someone spitting on you.”

Punk said that the issue was a “PS5 malfunction where it will make your pad walk backwards and nothing else works,” which also supposedly also happened during Evo Japan’s Street Fighter 6 game in 2024.

The 26-year-old has been a major player in the professional fighter game scene for some time now, with impressive seasons in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Capcom Pro Tour.

Punk is also the current Street Fighter 6 champion, so his words berating PlayStation 5 shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Although some accused Punk of using the PlayStation 5 malfunctions as an easy excuse following his loss, there was complaints from other contestants saying their PS5 was overheating with controllers struggling to keep up.

Punk took to X again to make light of the situation following other’s complaints.

As well as PlayStation getting hate, Evo Japan has also come under scrutiny with a history of malfunctions affecting important games in past tournaments as well.

Punk will be hoping that the PS5 malfunctions are resolved ahead of the Fatal Fury City Of The Wolves World Championship later this year.
