New Rocket League esports decals cause community backlash

Fans upset by new Rocket League RLCS decals

Epic Games and Psyonix have revealed a new set of in-game decals for Rocket League esports teams but the new items have been met with huge backlash from the community.

The announcement revealed new decals and goal explosions for 12 RLCS teams from all over the globe which will be available in the game’s new RLCS shop. Epic also confirmed that the decals will work on any car body in the game except those based on third-party IP like the Batmobile which has been a long-requested feature.

However, there was still a lot of anger from the community, who bemoaned both the quality and the amount of skins. One Redditor commented: “I didn’t see a single decal I actually want. I was excited for new esports decals and I was just completely let down. These are awful.” Meanwhile, many were baffled as to why Team Falcons were given a blue goal explosion despite the team always playing in green.

A lot of fans were also left disappointed with the amount of decals considering the previous esports shop featured 27 teams, more than double the amount of this recent release. One Redditor believes this is a sign that the game is moving backwards, stating: “I honestly don’t know how the situation even got this bad, it just seems that with every time they updated the shop they were removing less and less features, first it was home/away decals, then goal explosions, then anodized on the cars and now they’re hardly having any decals at all, like why? It makes absolutely no sense how we’re going backwards rather than forwards .”

And to add to those frustrations, many fans were confused by some of the team selections with TSM the sole OCE representative and Team BDS received a skin despite not competing for a few months. With only 12 teams selected, there were a few glaring omissions with recent RLCS Birmingham Major winners Karmine Corp being the most egregious though the organisation have since explained their absence.

And on top of all this, there is growing pressure on Epic Games and Psyonix to also address the current online issues the game is facing with many pro players struggling to practice with consistent ddos attacks affecting their gameplay.

All of this has led to fears for Rocket League’s future with another Reddit comment summing up the growing concerns: “Not even as a joke or exaggeration but RLCS is probably done after this season. If this is the effort they put in to represent orgs, which made this esport what it is, I genuinely don’t see why Vitality, KC or whoever will stay and burn money instead of investing the money into CS or any Riot Games IP.”
