The second edition of the esports World Cup is coming up this year and the foundation chief has said this could be the best we’ve ever seen ahead of the tournament
There has only been one official esports World Cup to date, with the competition rebranding in 2023 away from the Gamers8 series that came before it.
In 2025 the tournament will launch for its second edition and it has already being touted as one of the biggest gaming events of all time.
Saudi Arabia hosting World Cup
This year for the first time in history the esports World Cup will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Chief Product Officer of the event, Faisal bin Homran, spoke this week in Riyadh at the Sports Investment Forum where he gave a glowing report of his upcoming tournament.
“Sports is a big industry, and we have newcomers every year, and one of them is esports” he said. “Forums like this introduce the private sector for the future investors, for the future stakeholders, to be a part of this. It gives more information and credibility for [sports industries].
“This year will see the best esports tournament ever, for anyone who loves gaming or esports. Online or physical [audiences], they will have the best time of their life. It is a good opportunity for us (Saudi Arabia) to connect community culture with Esports.”
The Kingdom in Riyadh is continuing to take over some of gaming’s biggest events and as well as the World Cup this year, they have also secured exclusive hosting rights for the inaugural Esports Olympic Games which are booked for 2027.
When is the esports World Cup 2025?
The World Cup will get underway in summer, with the tournament running from July 7th until August 24th 2025.
While each game has its own separate qualifiers building up to the tournament, the best of the best in the gaming world will take each other on in the championship series for individual titles at the World Cup.
