Tech, including tech surrounding gaming, is in a state of constant evolution. That’s hardly surprising of course with the quality of graphics these days and the rise of emerging tech like VR and the blockchain. When history looks back, the 2020s may be seen as relatively early days in the technological era, perhaps like the early motor cars of the 1920s – way more sophisticated than 20 years earlier but still with rapid evolution ahead.

Keeping that parallel in mind, it makes the current esport scene somewhat in a state of flux. A couple of months ago, there was a lot of fuss about CS:GO’s 10th anniversary. League of Legends was launched in 2009, and even Dota 2, the other one of the “big three” esport games, has been around since 2013. The world moves on, and esports’ top games are starting to show their age. Each has its own leagues, tournaments and star players and teams.

However, there are potential new esport games emerging all the time. Let’s take a look at a new generation of games that may impact esports in the future.

Overwatch 2

Overwatch, released in 2016, already has a thriving esport scene. OK, it is not as big as CS:GO at al, but it was at one time rated the sixth most popular esport game. Overwatch 2 is not so much a sequel as an update, and can immediately be slotted into the existing Overwatch esport ecosystem.

The smaller team sizes are causing consternation for some pros, but the Overwatch 2 rollout should some give this game the shot in the arm it needs to recover the dwindling player numbers. Maybe then, it can recapture some momentum in esports.

Midair: Community Edition

Here’s another update to an existing game. Midair is a jetpack shooter that demands skillful shooting and also clear-headed navigation. Its action makes this a game that could generate some fun on the casual esport circuit.

The new CE (Community Edition) version makes all items available to all players from the outset, the progression system has been scrapped, and it’s fair to assume that this decision is all about making Midair CE a better esport proposition. The release date keeps slipping back, and best guesses are now early 2023.

MLB The Show

Granted, this baseball title is a little out of left field. But here’s the thing, FIFA has proved that “sports” esports can succeed, even if they’re not as huge as the big three. In particular, they serve as the perfect bridge for sportsbetting enthusiasts who use the sites at https://www.gamblingsites.org/sports-betting/sites/ to bet on traditional sports to make the leap to esport. After all, what could be easier than betting on a soccer game – or baseball?

The developers are pushing the esport angle more with this new release, and both the Summer Circuit and the recently completed Fall Circuit attracted some attention and media coverage. None of that mattered much to Fall winner Zazzi28, however, who laughed off a game freeze in the final to comfortably take the crown.
