Team Falcons take top spot for ALGS Match Point Finals, but several major teams see Championship dreams fade

LAN Bracket Stage days consistently offer the most intense Apex Legends competition. The ALGS Year 5 Championship has been no exception, with yet another sensational day from Team Falcons, and major upsets that saw Championship dreams brutally crushed.

ENUK breaks down which teams qualified for the Match Point Finals, which came agonisingly close to qualification, and which fell disappointingly short.

All Match Point Final teams confirmed, Team Falcons take first seed

The age-old battle of the IGLs between ImperialHal on Team Falcons and Zer0 on Team Liquid may be coming to an end, as Team Falcons continue their spectacular Group Stage performance to seed first into the Match Point Finals.

Close behind in Winners Bracket qualification were GoNext, TSM, Hotdog Mafia, and Virtus.pro.

While Alliance and ENTER FORCE.36 enjoyed stronger performances overall on Day 1 of the ALGS Year 5 Championship, they also comfortably qualified through the Winners Bracket in 6th and 9th, respectively.

SUPERNOVA also displayed notable strength, with the infamous “Grim Reaper” Konstantin’ Hardecki’ Kozlov and his team becoming the only LCQ team to qualify through the Winners Bracket.

Meanwhile, ten of the Match Point Final teams qualified through the Losers Round 2 Bracket.

UNLIMIT ultimately emerged on top of the Losers Round 2 lobby, closely followed by Legacy. Oblivion rounded out the top three, an impressive result for then unsigned LCQ team.

Which teams were eliminated in the ALGS Championship Bracket Stage?

Several high-profile teams were eliminated before the Match Point Final, some in a brutal fashion.

Citadel Gaming, one of the standout teams in ENUK’s ALGS Year 5 Championship Day 1 analysis, could not regain their previous rhythm in any of their Bracket Stage matches. Despite their immense Group Stage success, they ultimately finished in 30th place.

Teams with extensive Apex Legends LAN experience also found themselves among the bottom 20, including GaiminGladiators, Team Mango, Aurora, VK Gaming, FaZe Clan, Boogie Boarders, AlQadsiahEsports, and ROC Esports.

However, perhaps the most shocking elimination was Team Liquid Alienware’s.

For years, Team Liquid’s IGL, Rhys ‘Zer0’ Perry, has been held on-par with Philip ‘ImperialHal’ Dosen on Team Falcons. However, while the Falcons soared, Team Liquid sank, with Zer0 seemingly unable to manoeuvre his team into favourable positions.

From one crushing game to the next, the only glimmer of hope appeared in the Losers Bracket Round, Game 5, where well-placed Kraber shots gave them the opening they needed to win a lobby.

Despite this, the momentum did not carry across to Game 6. They ended the Championship in a crushing 33rd place.

Who joins Team Falcons as favourites to win the Championship trophy?

Thanks to their incredibly consistent performance across all sets of games so far, Team Falcons certainly sit ahead of the other 19 remaining teams as favourites to take the ALGS Year 5 Championship trophy.

However, several other notable contenders cannot be ignored in the Match Point Final lobby, including powerful underdogs.

Firstly, the EMEA powerhouse Alliance should never be ruled out. Their trio’s fine-tuned formula repeatedly causes issues for other teams in the lobby, and the firepower behind Miron ‘Effect’ Novikov and Andre ‘unlucky’ Türk is formidable.

SUPERNOVA are also a team to watch closely. Although more inconsistent, their unpredictability has indisputable charm. They are also on a revenge arc of sorts after being dropped by the organisation Aurora for another roster, which ironically did not qualify.

Meanwhile, the unsigned teams Hotdog Mafia, Legacy, and Oblivion are all wildcard teams that have brought thrilling gameplay to the tournament.

Despite unsigned teams being at a distinct disadvantage compared to those signed by organisations, with far less resources, finances, or bootcamping opportunities, these three have left their mark.

Legacy left a particularly notable impact on the Losers Bracket Round 2 lobby, adopting a hyper-aggressive gameplay that left no space for mercy.

Ninjas in Pyjamas also have the potential to lay hands on the Championship trophy.

Guiding Nicholas ‘Vein’ Hobbs, Cole ‘McLovin’ Wilson, and Matias ‘Kurev’ Riffel is coach Elias ‘raven’ Ghribi. In 2023, raven was the mastermind coach behind TSM’s double-trophy claiming season, and his Match Point Final experience could be invaluable.

Of course, Team Falcons’ dominance so far remains the most notable.

However, with so many talented and unpredictable rosters present, it remains anyone’s game for the taking.
