Paper Rex recovers from a middling tournament start to win in style
Paper Rex fans would have been anxious to see their new signing, Adrian ‘invy’ Jiggs Reyes, on the server after the Filipino replaced Patrick ‘PatMen’ Mendoza.
Early signs were not fantastic for PRX in the tournament, as a 13-5 victory over Nova Esports gave way to close losses to FunPlus Phoenix and Gen.G.
Nevertheless, the roster recovered to defeat Bilibili Gaming and squeak into the playoffs.
It was in the playoffs that stars Wang ‘Jinggg’ Jing Jie and Ilya ‘something’ Petrov truly came online, as two close maps gave way to a 13-2 dismantling of G2 on Haven to secure the series.
Paper Rex’s revenge tour then began, with two clean victories against FPX, first on split and then on Bind, with Jinggg and Jason ‘forsaken’ Susanto truly heated up to the event.
invy, while not the most impactful player of the series, recorded a commendable 18/14/10 KDA in the series.
Next up, the Bo5 Grand Final against regional rivals, Gen.G. Yet, there was little competitive edge in the server.
Gen.G blew Paper Rex away on their first pick of Abyss, but after that, PRX were fully in control, retaliating with the same 13-5 scoreline on Split.
A 9-0 start on Haven gave PRX full control of the map and the series, as Gen.G could just not convert those clutch situations. By contrast, PRX took their chances on the attacking side instantly to close out the map 13-3.
On Bind, the map threatened to be close after a 7-5 opening half went the way of PRX, but once the rifles came out for PRX, they were unstoppable as they stormed to a 13-9 overall victory to win the tournament.
Overall, PRX dominated behind a startling individual performance from d4v41, who recorded 65 kills throughout the four-map affair, earning him the MVP award.
