Megabonk and Cloverpit hit landmarks as indies thrive on Steam

Megabonk and Cloverpit have hit rarely achieved landmarks as the indie roguelikes take hold of gamers, who evidently can’t put the games down.

The indie games, developed by Vedinad and Panik Arcade, respectively, have taken hold of streaming platforms with notable streamers embracing the ‘bullet heaven’ games.

Megabonk a megahit

Megabonk hit the rare landmark of 1,000,000 copies sold only two weeks after its initial release.

The game’s simple one-line description is ‘Vampire Survivors but 3D’, and that DNA is evident in the game, but with a more humorous and sardonic tone.

For example, you wouldn’t get a skeleton with a skateboard in Vampire Survivors.

The game has been an instant success, praised for the progression pathways that allow deeper and more involved builds, as well as its movement, which players are revelling in now that they have escaped the shackles of a 2D plane.

The game broke the 100,000 concurrent player boundary over the weekend, making it one of Steam’s most played games, a metric it has sustained over the last few days.

The game has also been a streaming hit with notable streamers such as Shroud, jerma985, and pokelawls streaming the game, with the game reaching a peak of 128,802 viewers on Twitch.

The game is developed by a single developer, named Vedinad, who has stated their intent to outline a roadmap of development for the game after receiving feedback for the game.

Internet sleuths on Reddit have pointed out that Vedinad is ‘Danidev’ backwards, a YouTuber and indie game developer whom the Megabonk developer seems to be a fan of.

Venidad has his own YouTube channel where he outlines the development of the game.

Cloverpit’s spooky slots capture Balatro audience

Cloverpit hit a similar landmark over the weekend, reaching 500,000 sales.

The spooky slot machine game developed by Panik Arcade resembles Balatro in that it is a roguelike based around a typical game of chance, but like Balatro, you can weigh the odds in your favour.

Chasing certain combos and patterns on the slot machine can grant better outcomes.

The game’s overall sinister tone and grimy presentation have drawn comparisons to games like Inscryption or Buckshot Roulette.

The game has proven to be similar to its slot machine inspiration in its addictiveness, pulling over 25,000 concurrent players on Steam.

The game’s popularity on Twitch has rivalled Megabonk, drawing 89,269 viewers and being a favoured game of Canadian streamer NorthernLion, who can’t stop chasing that jackpot.

Following on from the smash indie success of Team Cherry’s Silksong, the long-awaited sequel to Hollow Knight, it seems that indies are having no issues competing with AAA developers.

With the indie games being so prominent on social media and streaming platforms, indies may have reached a new peak of dominance in the zeitgeist.
