Riot Games has revealed why they have decided to scrap the League of Legends Championship of the Americas (LTA) after just one year.
In 2024, Riot Games attempted a major regional rebrand, combining the Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLoL) and the North American League Championship Series (LCS) under one banner.
This merged North and South America into one competitive structure, connected through cross-conference matches.
Riot Games originally said it would raise the level of play and deliver more high-stakes matches.
However, after just one year, the LTA has been rescrapped while the CBLoL and the LCS have been reintroduced.
Riot Games explains why League of Legends LTA has been scrapped
The new LTA for League of Legends faced criticism from the community, leading to the change from Riot Games.
It was criticised as overly complex and fans missed the nostalgia of the CBLoL and the LCS.
Riot Games in their statement said: “The LTA delivered valuable learnings but it also became clear that fans feel the deepest pride and connection to their original leagues, and missed that element in LTA.
“Regional pride and history are core to the League of Legends esports experience, and our communities consistently told us they wanted their leagues back. Not just the LTA wearing the old brands, but a true restoration of the leagues.”
The company added: “We are carrying forward the positive lessons from the LTA around setting a higher bar for competition, innovation, and pathways to pro play. This isn’t just a return—it’s a step forward, built to make both leagues stronger for the future and more connected to the players, teams, and communities that define them.”
After Worlds 2025 concludes in November, League of Legends will revert to LCS and CBLoL. In addition, cross-regional playoffs will be removed, allowing each region to run its own season and crown its own champion.
What happened in the LTA in 2025?
The LTA was launched with two conferences, LTA North and LTA South.
FlyQuest beat Cloud9 in June to win the LTA North Conference, after reaching the quarter-finals of last year’s world championships.
The esports organisation then beat the Brazilian team Vivo Keyd Stars to win the inaugural LTA Championship, with 100 Thieves joining the pair in the LoL Worlds 2025.
As per esports charts, the cross-conference grand final reached just 166,000 viewers – far below the numbers the LCS or CBLoL once commanded.
