Nintendo have confirmed that the long-rumoured Super Mario Galaxy Movie is happening, and have set its release date for April 2026.
The announcement came as part of the September 12 Nintendo Direct, which was packed with content for Mario (and Yoshi) fans, amongst other announcements.
What was announced at Nintendo Direct?
Nintendo began the Direct by unveiling the logo marking the 40th anniversary celebrations of the original Mario, Super Mario Bros.
The anniversary will be celebrated with a light show in December, located at the Nintendo Museum in Uji, Kyoto, Japan.
Next up was the big announcement of the event: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The movie comes after the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

The new film, themed around Super Mario Galaxy, is supported by the release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Nintendo Switch as a bundle coming October 2.
Galaxy was already available on Switch as part of Super Mario 3D All-stars, which featured Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, but players have not been able to play Galaxy 2 until this new release.
Nintendo also announced Mario Tennis Fever for Switch 2, releasing on February 12 2026.
The game is the latest in the Mario Tennis series, which most recently featured Mario Tennis Aces for the Nintendo Switch, released in June 2018.
‘2D’ Mario was also featured with Super Mario Bros. Wonder also coming to Switch 2. The version features the new co-op mode, ‘Meetup in Bellabel Park.’
The game was announced in conjunction with a Super Mario Talking Flower toy.
Next up, Nintendo announced ‘Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.’ The Switch 2 title will launch in the Spring of next year.
The 2D game features a charming style seemingly influenced by claymation as well as Nintendo’s own ‘Paper’ aesthetic.

Next up was Donkey Kong Bonanza, which is receiving paid DLC releasing September 12. The paradise-themed DLC featured DK Island and Emerald Rush.
Next up was Pokémon Pokopia. The game tasks a Ditto, who transforms into a human, to maintain and look after a homestead in the fashion of Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing.
Surrounded by your Pokémon friends, you can plant and grow plants and use your Pokémon friends to help you as you build your ideal world.
