GeoGuessr World Cup 2025 sets new viewership record

The GeoGuessr World Cup 2025 has set a new record after becoming the most watched tournament for the game of all time.

In total, 16 players competed at the finals which were held in Copenhagen, over August 29th and 30th.

Data from the Esports Charts, show that it was the most watched GeoGuessr tournament of all time, showing how much the game’s esports scene has grown.

What viewership figures did the GeoGuessr World Cup attract?

The GeoGuessr World Cup 2025 hit a peak viewing figure of 363,415, according to Esports Charts.

This marks a significant jump of over 65,000 viewers compared to last year’s event – marking a 22% increase.

Held over two days at Copenhagen’s K.B. Hallen Arena, the tournament also set a new record for total hours watched, amassing 1.67 million hours across its 19-hour broadcast. This figure reflects a modest increase from the 1.611 million hours recorded in 2024.

The surge in numbers highlights the growing popularity of the geography-based guessing game.

GeoGuessr is a website that drops a player in a random location in the world using Google Maps. Competitors need to mark on a global map where they think they started, earning more points the closer they are to the correct location.

Who won the GeoGuessr World Cup?

The GeoGuessr World Cup was won by American Radu ‘Radu C’ Casapu, who beat Hungarina player Szabolcs ‘Debre’ Debre in the final.

There was a $108,470 (£80,953) prize pool, of which Radu C took home $48,470 (£36,240).

Rising popularity of GeoGuessr esports

The GeoGuessr esports ecosystem continues to gain traction, with World Cup viewership soaring by over 400% in the past two years. The 2025 circuit featured offline events in Japan, the United States, and Sweden, complemented by online qualifiers to secure spots in the season-ending World Cup.

At the close of the 2025 broadcast, organisers hinted at the location for the 2026 GeoGuessr World Cup. Fans have speculated that Berlin, Germany, will host next year’s event. Details about the 2026 circuit, including locations for offline events, are yet to be announced.

Earlier this year, GeoGuessr withdrew from the Esports World Cup.

GeoGuessr was due to hold its last chance wildcard tournament in July at the event in Saudi Arabia. This served as the last chance for GeoGuessr players to qualify for the World Cup in Copenhagen.

The news was met with backlash among the GeoGuessr community. A group of map creators pulled their contributions from the game to protest its participation.

However, as a result of the protests, GeoGuessr decided to withdraw from the Esports World Cup.
