Major UK retailer cancels Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders a week before launch

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders

UK high street retailer Game has apologised after some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders were cancelled.

Gamers have been eagerly awaiting the release of the second Switch, after the incredible success of the first, which was released in March 2017.

However, ahead of next week’s launch on June 5th, some gamers will now not be able to get their hands on the new switch on its release date.

Game’s Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order cancellation apology

Game took to the social media platform X to apologise to those whose Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders were cancelled.

The post stated: “We sincerely apologise for the recent cancellation of some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order.

“We’re currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible. If your order was impacted, please know that we are doing everything we can and will be in touch with further updates and next steps.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this. We truly appreciate your support.”

The retailer did not provide a reason for the cancellation of pre-orders.

Switch fans respond to Game cancelling pre-orders

The post on X, formerly known as Twitter, was posted with replies disabled, so followers couldn’t directly respond to the news.

However, many users quote-tweeted the post to share their thoughts on the announcement.

@Shoenen_XIV tweeted: “Not sure if I’m affected but to all those affected this is real s***ty. And there is no explanation as to why exactly leaving us to speculate.”

Some followers speculated whether Game took on too many pre-orders – though the announcement did not specify the reasons why they were cancelled.

@ohhimarc_1982 said: “So in short, you took too many preorders and royally f***ed up.”

@Justice_Ste added: “My favourite is when they close off replies because they don’t wanna deal with kickback. Gutted if you got your order cancelled.”

The Switch 2 has already attracted criticism from fans over pricing. The standalone console is priced at £395.99 – an increase from £279.99 for the original Switch – while a bundle including a digital copy of Mario Kart World is priced at £429.99.

The price of games has also sparked controversy with a boxed edition of Mario Kart World priced at £74.99.

However, the pricing does not appear to have impacted sales, with most retailers now unable to take on new pre-orders before next week’s release date.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has several new features including a new and improved controller.
