Overwatch 2 has teased its latest skins collab with popular 90s anime Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary.
Gundam is a massive media franchise from Japan with popular shows and toys based around militant flying mechs. The Gundam Wing anime specifically aired in Japan on April 7, 1995 and then made its Western TV debut in the year 2000.
Overwatch 2 is about to kick off Season 16 on April 22 in a huge update which will see the release of the game’s new permanent game mode, Stadium. The new set of Gundam Wing skins and content will then follow exactly one week later as Blizzard confirmed the collaboration will release on Tuesday, April 29th at 11:00am PT (7:00pm BST).
Not much is yet known about the collaboration other than the fact that Mercy is getting a new skin as seen in the teaser image above and at the end of the Season 16 and Stadium trailer. Typically though, these collabs lead to a few premium skins only available through the in-game shop as well as challenges and bonus cosmetics such as highlight intros, player icons, and emotes.
Overwatch 2 anime collabs
Overwatch 2 has repeatedly maximised its crossover potential by collaborating with big-name anime series to release exciting skins for fans.
The first was a partnership with One Punch Man in 2023 which appropriately gave Doomfist a Saitama skin though there were also excellent costumes for Solider 76 who appeared as Mumen Rider and Genji as Genos.
Another 90s anime that had a surprise event with Overwatch is Cowboy Bebop with Cassidy starring as Spike Spiegel, Mauga as Jet Black, Ashe as Faye Valentine, Sombra as Ed, and Wrecking Ball appropriately as Ein.
Blizzard also secured a collaboration with one of the most popular modern-day shonen, My Hero Academia. The ambitious crossover turned Tracer into Deku, Juno into Uravity, Reaper into Tomura Shigaraki, Kiriko into Himiko Toga, and Reindhardt into the iconic All Might.
Overwatch has also crossovers with cartoons Transformers and Avatar The Last Airbender as well as with K-pop group LE SSERAFIM.
