For the past decade, G2 Esports have become synonymous with European League of Legends dominance, and their Danish star mid-laner Rasmus ‘Caps’ Winther has been at the heart of its success for much of that time. As G2 celebrate their 10th anniversary, Caps sat down to reflect on his decision to join the organisation, the evolving League meta, and his aspirations for the team in the years to come.
In this interview, Caps takes us down memory lane, recounting the pivotal moments that led him to G2 and how the team continues to evolve, with the revised G2 2025 LoL roster locked in and ready to go. He also shares his thoughts on 2025’s dynamic competitive format, the exciting — and challenging— changes to Summoner’s Rift, and the work that remains in G2’s quest to claim the coveted Worlds trophy.
Thank you so much for your time Caps. We’re now here celebrating the 10th anniversary of G2 and you’ve been with them for a long time, since late 2018, but I want to go back down memory lane. What was the first thing that made you decide to sign with G2 at the time?
I mean, there were definitely a lot of different things, I would say. I think it was a big decision and I think that I just trusted in the players a lot.
I thought Jankos was the best jungler and of course I definitely wanted to work with him, but also I had talked a lot with Perkz and he seemed like we had a very similar view on the game and we shared a lot of thoughts and I definitely really enjoyed talking with him as well.
So I felt like I would like to work with him even though him going ADC was a bit of a question mark. And then I think in general it was a lot between Fnatic and G2 at the time, because Fnatic had been the old team that just won all the titles, but then G2 came in and started winning.
So it was the two teams that won a lot and I think at the end I settled for G2, because I also wanted to try something new. Until then I had spent two years on Fanatic, but I hadn’t tried all the LEC teams, so trying something new definitely sounded exciting as well – and G2 just felt like the best option.
“I don’t know if I’m still a pro player next year. I know I’m a pro player this year, I don’t know if I’ll be a pro player next year. I dunno if I’ll be the year after that. And that’s kind of always the default I’ve had in my career. And who knows what League will be like next year. Maybe it’s a completely different game. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Caps, G2
You said you wanted to try new things. Is there a future in which that you would like to try new things, or did you find your home here in G2 for the future?
Yeah, I definitely think I have been very happy with everything in G2. I think that’s why I’ve stayed so long. I think that both the players have always been very good, but also the staff have always been very proactive.
If we need anything, if there’s something we need to be doing as players, they’re holding us accountable very well as well. So I’ve always been very happy with everything there.
And I think it’s always hard to think about the future because I always try to just think at one season at a time, kind of. Obviously, sometimes I have signed for longer times and stuff like that, but I always try to just think one season forward, because you never know what will happen.
I don’t know if I’m still a pro player next year. I know I’m a pro player this year, I don’t know if I’ll be a pro player next year. I dunno if I’ll be the year after that. And that’s kind of always the default I’ve had in my career.
It’s also the kind of League itself. League changes so much. So I don’t know what it will look like next year. That’s kind of the same thing, right, where I love League right now and I really enjoy it and I’ve done stuff for the last many years, but who knows what will be next year. Maybe it’s a completely different game. We’ll have to wait and see.
I feel like it’s already a completely different game, and one of the things that I wanted to ask heading into 2025. You’ll play three different formats for the LEC this season, and then we have three different international LoL events in 2025. Do you predict some kind of fatigue going into 2025?
I don’t really feel any fatigue yet, at least. I think there’s definitely been some tough years in the past. I remember season eight, season nine, there were definitely some exhausting years. I think there were a lot of tournaments, a lot of flying, and stuff like this. But I think since then we’ve obviously not made it quite as hard. But I also think Riot have tuned down a lot of tournaments.
There used to be the Rift rivals, All Stars and also just the LEC finals, where we had to fly there and be a different place for the finals, which obviously I love, but at the same time it’s also more exhausting. So in that sense, I think our new system is very easy or very relaxed. Sure, they’re adding a few more again, so we will see how it’ll feel this year.
But I think for me it just makes it more exciting and I’m looking forward to traveling a lot and getting to hopefully make it to the international tournaments and win there.
And there are also a lot of changes in the map for LoL Season One 2025, so let’s discuss that too. We have Atakhan, and feats of strength, we have new minions, new towers mechanics. How do you feel about the changes?
Yeah, I mean I think we are still exploring them, so I don’t have a perfect opinion on them yet. I think that it feels like there’s a lot more fighting. There’s always some objective spawning, there’s always something happening. I think initially I kind of liked a lot of the changes. I think for example, the tower damage, I think that makes it nicer: I think the fact that it’s easy to dive, it’s not necessarily great, cause it always feels very bad to get tower-dived.
And I think now it becomes just that much harder to dive people and you really have to have a numbers advantage or be very confident or outplay your opponent. And I like that because I mean I just think diving, I mean it’s obviously a part of League, but it also makes it less fun in a way.
For Feats of Strength and Atakhan I have a hard time putting an opinion on them, but at the same time I think the Feats of Strength is cool. Sometimes it feels like a little bit maybe random or it feels like the Boots can be a bit strong as well.
“I think Atakhan’s buffer where you revive is a little bit too strong, maybe. I think that one, I don’t know if maybe they’ll change it or maybe it’ll stay this way, but it definitely feels very strong in our scrims.”
G2, Caps
But I think fighting on Atakhan feels the same as Baron fights and Drake fights. I really enjoy Atakhan fights. I think they’ve been the most fun I’ve had it a long time because Grubs fights and Herald fights and all these different fights, they’ll always be a little bit different.
But the Atakhan one is very different because it’s a completely different part of the map. It’s further up and the mechanics are also very different. They do a lot of damage, the mechanics, so you really need to think about them. Whereas with Baron, a lot of the mechanics, you kind of just ignore a bit.
I think it’s been very fun to theory craft how to optimise these fights, and maybe in a few months it’ll just be streamlined a bit and it’ll be the same as a Drake fight or Herald fights. But so far it’s been a lot of fun.

This year of course we said before we are celebrating 10 years of G2. Moving forward in the next 10 years, what would you feel would be the optimal evolution for G2 as your team?
I definitely like how we have our eyes on winning Worlds and getting that trophy, and I think becoming, I guess a Worlds winning team would be the goal. I think we’ve really stepped up a lot of our processes the last few years.
We’ve been thinking a lot more about how we win Worlds and what we have to do right now in January to become the best team for October and November, when Worlds comes.
But that’s a process that can be improved a lot still, we’re definitely not at the level that we need to be. So just improving that process and getting as strong as possible ,and getting as conscious as possible about our day-to-day and how we become the best.
I’m going to ask it now, when you win Worlds, which champion will you pick for your skin?
I think it probably depend a lot on the tournament. I would probably, if there’s a champion that carries me that tournament, I would probably pick that. I think right now I would probably look towards LeBlanc or Sylas.
I think the Sylas from when we won MSI, it definitely felt like a pick I was very happy about. And LeBlanc has just been my most played champion every year, and now they’re doing a rework on her. So maybe, I mean, I guess they haven’t revealed the whole thing yet, they showed a bit in the cinematic, no?
Yeah, I believe it’s just a visual update.
Oh Okay. Yeah, I mean it will definitely be fun to see how she’ll look I guess in game as well. But I will probably look towards Sylas.

Caps, G2
Now last question. You of course have a lot of fans, you have been playing for a while now, you’ve done countless interviews and you’re very vocal as the face of the team. Is there something about yourself that your fans don’t know about that you would like to share with them?
I’m not sure actually. I think that I try to, I guess say openly if there’s something that I like. Whether it’s like the board games, joking around, I think maybe the fans sometimes see me joking too much, because that’s a lot of the side that I show outwards.
But when we play in the team, I can be a lot more serious. And maybe that’s not what comes to light, I guess, to the fans. So maybe that’s the more serious side of me that they don’t get to see as often.
The first LEC Winter 2025 match starts at 6pm CET (5pm GMT), with G2 playing KC at 9pm CET (8pm GMT)
