Update (October 8th 2024): Riot Games has reopened the 2024 Worlds Final ticket sale after postponing it due to ‘significant bot activity’.
Riot said: “Players must have an active Riot account created before October 1st 2024 and the account must have a record of League of Legends gameplay.
“From October 8th at 6am PT (2pm BST) through October 9th at 1pm PT (9pm BST), players will need to visit the Worlds Finals Ticket Eligibility page and enter the email address associated with their Riot Account.
“Once the account is verified, on October 10th, players will receive an email from Riot with a one-time use access code and a link to a private AXS sales page. Emails will be sent in waves, so they will not be received immediately after registering.
“Ticket sales will go live on October 11th at 6am PT (2pm BST) on the invite-only AXS sales page linked in verification email. Please note that going through the verification process and receiving a code does not guarantee a ticket. Tickets are subject to availability.”
Original article (October 4th 2024): Riot Games has postponed the latest 2024 LoL Worlds Final ticket sale in response to botting and scalping over the last 48 hours.
It comes as eager fans have been taking part in a seemingly futile lottery to secure tickets to the grand finals at London’s O2 on November 2nd 2024.
Riot said: “After discovering significant bot activity impacting our pre-sales over the last 48 hours, we’ve taken the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily postpone the final round of ticket sales for the Worlds Final.
“We’re working to resolve the issue and will update you as soon as we can. We’re also identifying tickets purchased by bots so we can get them back into the hands of actual fans.
“Fans who have already purchased tickets for the Worlds Final legitimately are unaffected. However, if you believe your purchase has been impacted, please contact AXS customer service so they can assist in troubleshooting our issue.
“Thanks for your patience as we work through this – our goal is to ensure a fair and smooth ticketing process for everyone.”
The news comes after the first wave of Worlds 2024 finals tickets was released in August, with some scalpers listing tickets at £2,000+ and some fans falsely flagged as bots.
Many fans took to social media to comment on the delay, with some thankful action is finally being taken and others criticising the delayed response.
Hancock said: “It’s downright criminal you guys only noticed this now when the last round of tickets two months ago were all sold within five minutes of opening.”
HappyChimeNoises asked for Riot to require a level 30 verified League of Legends game account to get a ticket.
YetAnotherScrub said: “The previous sales were gone within two minutes, tickets were appearing on resale sites at 5x retail price the same day… The issue was that the queue link could be shared with anybody once you were in queue. Thanks for looking into it. I just really want these scalpers to lose.”
Jarathel asked: “Are you going to investigate for the first sales ? Because a lot of us waited for hours in the queue while all the tickets were sold in a matter of seconds.”
Charlotte Buchan said: “Go on Viagogo and see the seats that have been taken by bots, and when people buy tickets make it ID only or have the card with them that was used to purchase the tickets, simple fix to stop the scammers!”
Ismii Azizul joked: “Why not using Vanguard?”
The 2024 Worlds Final ticket sale timeline so far
Back in August this year, Riot Games shared the ticket guide for the 2024 World Championship Grand Finals in London. A new addition to the purchasing format was the split of ticket sales into two waves, which would involve two exclusive partner pre-sales followed by a general sale.
By separating ticket sales into two waves, fans had hope that there would be more chances to purchase the highly coveted tickets.
Later in the month, as mentioned, the first wave of Worlds 2024 finals tickets was released, with many left disappointed and empty-handed after waiting hours in a digital queue. Riot did not comment on the matter.
The second wave of tickets went out this week, and sadly, tickets seemingly evaporated into thin air yet again. Many found themselves waiting for hours only for nothing, while others sat patiently in a paused queue to only be booted out of the queue hours later. This angered many who took to social media to vent their grief or make desperate attempts to remedy the situation.
To the exasperation of those who reached out to the O2 ticket site AXS, they received a generic response which had been copied between each post and email.
Adding flames to the fire, a loophole was discovered in the website which allowed some fans (but mainly bots) to skip the queue entirely by using an open link to the ticket selection page.
With ticket sales in disarray and nine hours before tickets were meant to go on general sale, at roughly 1am BST, Riot Games announced the postponement of the general 2024 Worlds Final ticket sale.
