London’s Twickenham Stadium will play host to Boss Battles: Phase 1 this September, a tournament billed as ‘Europe’s new super major and the biggest event of 2022 for UK Smash Bros’.
It will take place on the weekend of September 3rd and 4th 2022 in the stadium’s 1,000+ sqm Rose Suite, which will be filled with more than 200 monitors and has space for up to 800 people.
This suite is linked to the live room, which will feature a 570-seat auditorium and allow guests to traverse between the two rooms.
Boss Battles has a single-player cap of 768 and a doubles side event cap of 64.
Guests including Furia player and content creator Griffin ‘Fatality’ Miller will be in attendance.
There will also be a side tournament for Nintendo’s new Switch game, Mario Strikers: Battle League with 1v1 and doubles matches.
The event is being sponsored by esports organisation True Cryme.
In terms of prizing, Ultimate singles will have a prize pool of £7,640, with first place receiving £3,280, second receiving £1,528 and third receiving £916. Ultimate doubles will have a prize pool of £640, with first place receiving £320, and Mario Strikers will have a prize pool of £320, with first place receiving £160. There will be prize placements for the top eight in each tournament.
Organisers have said a host of prizes will be available including a raffle competition for a Nintendo Switch.
“Bring a Switch/monitor and/or become a volunteer and commentator to earn yourself some free tickets for the big prizes and a free T-shirt,” organisers said, with full details in the Twitter thread above.
Guests will also have the chance to join the organisers and the community for a meet and greet on Friday September 2nd at Prizm Nightclub, an 18+ venue.
Twickenham Stadium used to be home to UK esports organisation Excel Esports, before they moved to their Shoreditch office.
The UK has a mix of Smash Bros and FGC talent. Earlier this year, Frenzy qualified for Smash Summit 13 and became the first UK player to compete in the event’s history.
Tickets to Boss Battle are available at start.gg, with a spectator weekend pass costing £35, and a participant pass starting at £50, with the bracket fee (£10 per tournament) on top. Scheduling, rules and other info like prize breakdowns can also be found on the website.
