This year’s COVID-19 outbreak has negatively affected pretty much every aspect of our lives – and esports events are no exception.
Esports gambling was expanding, due to the lack of traditional sports events at the beginning of this outbreak. However, things have changed and organisers of major events are now facing the same problems. Therefore, most of the events have already been cancelled, not just for the following weeks or months, but for the whole year.
Here are some of the esports events that have been cancelled recently.
Bandai Namco
Publisher Bandai Namco has cancelled all world tour events for this year. This means you can’t count on competitions in popular fighting games like Tekken 7, Soulcalibur VI and Dragon Ball FighterZ to go ahead.
While that’s bad news, the company is working on an alternate solution, which will come in the form of online competition events (these should start in the near future).
Tokyo Game Show
The famous Tokyo Game Show has been cancelled as well. For 23 years of the expo/convention’s existence, this is the first time that the annual event won’t happen. The 2020 Game Show was supposed to take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, between September 24th and 27th.
At this point, it’s still unclear whether we are about to see something before the 2021 event or not.
E3 2020
The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2020 was initially planned for summer 2020, but was cancelled back in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At first, many expected that the famous expo will be just rescheduled, but it quickly became clear that this year’s event won’t happen at all. Later, a digital event was planned, but organizers eventually gave up on this idea, as assembling such an event turned out to be impossible. We are still waiting for new updates.
Fortnite World Cup
The initial competition became famous for huge prizes that were available through various events during 2019. So, everyone expected the bar to be raised further for the 2020 Fortnite World Cup.
However, all the events have been cancelled and from what we know so far, organisers are already working on next year’s competition. Meanwhile, Epic Games will continue with their online Fortnite Champion Series.
CEO 2020
The popular competition of fighting games has been held for a full decade – and this is the first time it’s seeing delays.
Still, a great thing to know is that, unlike most other competitions that have been cancelled or delayed indefinitely, organizers of CEO 2020 have already came up with the new date. CEO 2020 will take place in December.
Arena of Valor World Cup 2020
The Arena of Valor World Cup 2020 was expected to be the third edition of the established yearly event but it looks like we will have to wait for another year now. AWC 2020 has been cancelled and the next edition definitely won’t happen before 2021.
Street Fighter V: Champion Edition 2020
This tournament was supposed to happen this December in Paris, but the latest reports suggest it has been delayed and will take place in North America, sometime in the first quarter of the next year.
All live events have been cancelled. Instead, there will be 18 online regional tournaments, with the winners of each tournament advancing to next year’s Capcom Cup.
ESL One Birmingham 2020
This event wasn’t cancelled as such. It took place online. However, ESL One Birmingham has built a reputation as one of the UK’s biggest and best esports tournaments in recent years, so to see it without a physical event this year has been a real shame.
