What happened in the second Overwatch ESL UK Contender Cup?

This week, we had our second Overwatch ESL UK Contender Cup. And it was very interesting in comparison to last week.
A few teams had disbanded, like Choke and Velox, whilst some smaller teams had not returned. This means that once again anything seemed possible. With this in mind let’s look at how the night went for the teams.
First of all, the brackets had been more or less seeded based off last week’s results. Team Endpoint received a bye, CG had 2nd seed and Last Resort had 3rd seed. This would make more of a stable bracket in theory compared to last week’s description of a bottom heavy bracket.

Would there be an upset?

This week the teams played as expected, except for one match. Team StartSpot (a play on EndPoint, as explained in the video at the bottom of this article) is a new team to the Contender Cup. They have acquired two members from the Choke line-up: ChrisTFer and ChipSa.
On a side note, four out of six of the team members play on Team Project, so like EndPoint, the team seems to be becoming a UK roster and a main European roster. They were up against Team Last Resort, who had lost Keys for the night and was replaced with temporary sub Reecicle.  The series went in favour of StartSpot, with dominant play on Dorado and a cheesy Mei strategy on Kings Row.

The final of the second Overwatch Contender Cup

As expected, EndPoint went to the final where they placed what seemed to be the new powerhouse of StartSpot. The series was a dominant one for Team StartSpot as they went 3-0 in the Bo5 series.
To credit Endpoint, however, they made nice retakes on Nepal, but were unable to take the map. They also had some decent pushes on King’s Row, by taking the first point within a minute, and nearly won that map but lost on time with only a few metres to go at the final stage.  However, they were not able to make a strong push on Dorado and lost there.
This means that the four highest earners of the night for seeding are:

  1. Team StartSpot
  2. Team EndPoint
  3. Computerised Gamers
  4. Cognate Esports

As we approach next week, we should be able to get a good idea of the group stage rankings. The majority of teams in this week’s Contender Cup have pretty much confirmed their entry into the groups. You can sign up or check final standings here and most likely watch caster Dowsey’s Twitter feed for a community stream if you are interested.
