Teamfight Tactics Lore and Legends will feature 100 champions

Riot Games has released a new Dev Drop revealing the first details for the new Teamfight Tactics (TFT) set: Lore and Legends.

This is Set 16, which releases December 3rd and will be played as part of the TFT Paris Open World Championships format next month.

While previous sets stuck to around 60 champions from League of Legends (LoL), Lore and Legends will instead feature 100 unique champions.

However, 40 of those will only be accessible through the set’s new mechanic: unlockable champions. The unlockables will range from 2 costs to 7 costs.

How do champion unlocks work in TFT Lore and Legends?

Throughout a game, players will identify what champions they want to unlock and pursue them by completing challenges or requirements.

Once unlocked, that champion will be in that player’s pool for the rest of the game and guaranteed to show up in their next shop.

For example, to unlock the 5 cost Galio, a player will need to acquire 12 levels of Demacia.

Once unlocked and purchased, Galio’s traits will become active from the bench. He eventually dives into the fight, send a shockwave upon entry, without taking up a unit slot.

Additionally, TFT’s Lead Game Designer, Stephen ‘Mortdog’ Mortimer, revealed that more than half of the Yordle roster in Lore and Legends require an unlock.

Acquiring more Yordles unlocks perks like a health and attack speed buff for two Yordles or a free reroll each round for having six Yordles.

Unlockables will require players to plan ahead more and Riot hopes it will create more late-game comp diversity.

The TFT Lore and Legends set also has a feature called the Lorefinder, which tracks the champions players have unlocked.

Players will earn rewards for unlocking certain numbers of champions, including a special mystery award for top-fouring with all 40 unlockables.

However, supposedly just unlocking all 40 will be quite challenging in itself.

New traits revealed for TFT Lore and Legends

Mortdog also revealed that Shurima is the set’s high-powered chase trait.

All but one of the Shurima trait champions are unlockables, with 5 cost Azir the exception.

Each Shuriman will require difficult and contradictory unlock paths, like winning consecutive combats for Renekton, losing consecutive for Nasus, and alternating between for Xerath – with each challenge also requiring the player to not die.

Field all four Shurimans and they will all reach ‘godhood’ to become powerful three-star champions.

Meanwhile, Bilgewater comps will earn players Silver Serpent currency each round and extra on takedown.

This currency can then be spent on ‘the black market’ to buy stats, champions, and loot.

Tahm Kench will be an expensive purchasable with this method, who can be fed champions to permanently gain stats.

As for Demacian champions like Vayne, Garen, Lux, and Xin Zhao, they will passively gain bonus magic resist and armour.

When their team loses a percentage of health, Demacians then get powerful rally bonuses.

League of Legends’ new champion Zaahen will appear in the set too by getting the Trials of Twilight augment with Xin Zhao, who works in both Demacian and Ionian comps.

The Ixtal trait will give players quests to take on, rewarding players with treasure and power-ups upon completion.

With Ixtal there is a chance to unlock a new character called Brock, a very powerful 7 cost golem reminiscent of the walking Nexus from Nexus Blitz.

Shadow Isles champions gain power by collecting the souls of dead units.

Earning souls unlocks more champions after starting with 2 cost Viego and giving him two items to unlock Yorick.

From there, 20 souls will unlock Gwen, 75 souls unlock Kalista, and 150 souls unlock 5 cost Thresh, who uses his full LoL kit.

Legendary units in TFT Lore and Legends

The Dev Drop from Riot Games also teased some of the legendary units that will appear in the upcoming TFT set.

Baron Nashor will be a playable character in the new set, but requires two slots and will supposedly be difficult to unlock.

The powerful unit deals AoE damage, knocks up enemies, and pulls the map into a void.

Another epic monster from LoL will also appear in Atakhan. He will appear as a summon for the Noxus trait and will get more powerful with more Noxian champions and star levels.

And finally, one champion who will be quite unique in Lore and Legends is Ryze.

Ryze will become unlocked after fielding four different regions. However, he doesn’t benefit from any regions (traits) and doesn’t contribute to any either.

Instead, his abilities depend on the regions you are fielding, leading to lots of possible combinations.

Bilgewater makes his ability explode, Targon makes it heal, Yordle makes it shrink enemies, and Void makes it shred and sunder.

Meanwhile, LoL players just found a rare find of their own as the Neo Pax Sivir skin is available in LoL for the first time in eight years.
