Metal Gear Solid role

Oscar Isaac is primed to play Solid Snake when the Metal Gear Solid film hits the screens. Hollywood has been slowly trying to get back on its feet due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic which has shelved a lot of releases in 2020.

For Sony pictures, the Metal Gear Solid adaptation for the silver screen has been a long time in the making, although it is unclear when fans will be able to see it at the cinema. Nevertheless, Isaac has been cast in the lead role for a film that has been talked about since the Metal Gear Solid series creator Hideo Kojima first announced the project back in 2006.

Swirling rumours

For several years, gaming sites have been on a frenzy as to who would be handed the role of Solid Snake. The tension ratcheted up a few notches for both the franchise’s creator and its fans.

There were several big Hollywood stars that were touted to be handed the role of Solid Snake, and that included Christian Bale, while Kojima considered approaching Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman and Tom Hardy.

But it was Isaac who was approached, and the role was swiftly agreed between both parties. For Isaac, he is no stranger to being cast in big film franchises. He is probably best known for playing the pilot Poe Dameron in various Star Wars films and he has also starred in Ex Machina.

Snake charm

From an early stage, it was clear that Isaac was attracted to Solid Snake. Last year, Isaac put his hand up for the role in an interview.

He said: “Metal Gear Solid, that’s the one. I’m throwing my hat in for that one.”

Isaac’s name has popped up quite a few times and art director BossLogic shared his thoughts on Twitter in which he said the Star Wars actor would be well suited because “he has a dope mean mug, so I wanted to see how he looks”.

Editor’s Note: Konami is also working on several remasters that are probably coming out next year.

Even Metal Gear Solid director Jordan Vogt-Roberts – who directed Kong: Skull Island in 2017 – was not prepared to keep his cards close to his chest last year, as he weighed in with his support for Isaac on social media.

He tweeted: “The full process required to cast an icon hasn’t even started but… The ball’s in Oscar’s court.”

Isaac’s busy schedule

Isaac – who is represented by WME, Inspire Entertainment and Mitch Smelkinson at GGSSC – has a busy 2021 to look forward to. Aside from appearing in the Netflix action film Triple Frontier, Isaac is also set to appear in the adaptation of Dune as well as a Disney+ series which is based on and inspired by Marvel Comics anti-hero Moon Knight.

While Isaac has previously admitted that video game adaptations have failed to cotton on with fans in the same way that superhero adaptations have, because of plots going wrong, Solid Snake could end up being a defining career role for him.
