After a first day of competition at the StarLadder Budapest Major, which saw underdogs deliver in the Best of 1 matches, two of M80, NRG, Fluxo, and FlyQuest will advance.

GamerLegion and Lynn Vision at risk of elimination on Day 2

“You have to remember these damn Best of 1s, it’s all it takes is one bad day.

We saw what happened to the Falcons in Austin, right? You go, you lose some of those Bo1s, and then it’s a tough road.” – Janko ‘YNk’ Paunović on Best of 1s at the Major

GamerLegion and Lynn Vision now find themselves in that position. After two losses in the Best of 1s, they will have to flawlessly recover in the Best of 3s to progress.

In playing Red Canids and Fluxo, GamerLegion played two of the teams understood to be the weakest in the event, losing both times.

That not only underlines that they have started the event with poor ‘s bad in itself, but it also means they cannot play those teams later in the bracket, making their road more difficult.

At PGL Masters Bucharest, GamerLegion had one of their first unequivocally positive results in a long time, finishing 4th.

It was understood they had somewhat turned the corner, but on Day 1, they took a turn for the worse.

Lynn Vision can at least console themselves with the fact that they had two tough matchups, losing to FaZe and NiP.

What they cannot find solace in is how they lost: 13-5 to FaZe and 13-2 to NiP.

At the BLAST.tv Austin Major, Lynn Vision were a fan favourite after advancing all the way from Stage 1 to Stage 3.

On Budapest’s first day, the tenacity which marked that run was entirely absent as they were swept aside by FaZe and NiP.

Despite the losses, both teams will be favourites for their 0-2 Best of 3 contests against Rare Atom and The Huns.

NRG one step away from surprisingly advancing

Following the news that NRG IGL Nicholas ‘nitr0’ Cannella would miss the Major due to the birth of his child, few expected anything from NRG.

In truth, even with nitr0, they were an underdog to advance to Stage 2.

Yet NRG now will have three chances in Best of 3s to advance, starting with a regional NA matchup against M80, a team they recently defeated at LAN in Fragadelphia Ultra Mega Jersey.

Shocking wins against NiP and FaZe have put NRG on the verge of Stage 2, but perhaps what is most surprising is how good they looked in both cases.

Damian ‘daps’ Steele, NRG’s coach who is standing in for nitr0, looks more like a sixth man than a coach.

Mechanically, he has not been distant from several other IGLs at the event, and has smartly used his own play to enable his team to win rounds.

To return to earth, NRG’s best chance of advancing may be in their domestic rivalry. Now that advancement is a real possibility, they may tighten up a bit from the free-flowing displays in their first two contests.

One thing is for sure, daps has still got it.

FlyQuest on verge of Stage 2

FlyQuest could also make Stage 2, if they can overcome Fluxo, who were also understood to be one of the weaker teams entering the tournament.

The Brazilians upending GamerLegion and Fnatic, whose Train looked disjointed and poor only six weeks after adding Mykyta ‘jackasmo’ Skyba over Cai ‘CYPHER’ Watson.

The challenge of getting a team Major ready in that timeframe is substantial, but it was Fnatic’s decision, so there are no excuses.

Fluxo have largely been stuck in the Brazilian scene, whereas FlyQuest have had some decent showings at Tier 1.5 events, meaning it’s a great chance for the Aussies to advance.
