Britain’s William ‘mezii’ Merriman has become the first esports player ever to get a custom hashtag on X/Twitter.
The Brit joins the likes of LeBron James or seven-times Olympic gold medalist, Simone Biles in getting a special image beside their name displayed in hashtag form.
The hashtag comes after a year in which Vitality have dominated the opposition, winning seven events in a row, securing the ESL Grand Slam, and capturing 2025’s maiden major with victory in Austin.
#mezii and #kingmezii will both bring up the image, displaying an M with a crown and a star, signifying the Brit’s Austin Major victory. The image’s background is in Vitality’s colours, their characteristic yellow.
The hashtag drops just as IEM Cologne play-ins have begun. Will the hashtag buff mean mezii will be able to win back-to-back Colognes with Vitality and continue their event-winning streak?
In truth, Vitality probably don’t need any more help, but if it means seeing the hashtag a few more times, then Esports News UK is quite content for Vitality to continue their success.
Mezii a mainstream success
The hashtag isn’t the Brit’s only breakout into the mainstream of late. The news comes soon after mezii was interviewed by the BBC in light of his BLAST.tv Austin Major victory over The MongolZ.
On the BBC’s Newsbeat, mezii spoke to Andrew Rogers to give listeners an overview of the game and what his achievement means to the world of Counter-Strike.
In the interview, mezii mentioned making the British scene proud and hoping that further CS generations can step up and emulate his success, mentioning that he’s always open to helping new up-and-coming players and happy to communicate with anyone in the UK scene to help improve the UK esports scene.
With more publicity and more coverage of the sport, perhaps mezii can have that effect on the scene, and further Brits can get their own hashtags too!
Not bad for a “British playaaaaa”
